Gmail using Windows Live Mail after May 30, 2022

Can someone tell me how to set up to use Windows Live Mail for Gmail after the May 30, 2022 Gmail changes. There is something I have read about "app passwords" which sounds a lot like what Yahoo has done. I have about 75 clients who use WLM. Most of them have Gmail accounts.

I would rather not have to switch to a different mail client.

I would appreciate very much if someone could provide a step by step how to. I suspect there are several millions others like us.

Here's the procedure outlined by Kevin, as an edited quote, derived from several of his messages:

"Came across a work around which I hope will keep working come June 1st.

You need to go into your Google account and it is under Security. Turn on "2 Step Authentication" for each Gmail account and then add an App Password for WLM. You just need to generate the App Password from Google Security and then use that when you update your email ie send/ receive in your WLM. When you update your email ie send/ receive in WLM it will prompt you for this password instead of your Gmail password. The option to turn on/off Less Secure Apps in my security settings disappeared once I turned on 2 Step Authentication."

The previous version of this message also linked to a third video which I thought MIGHT also have a good solution but IT DID NOT. Which is why I've removed that third link. Specifically, you can NO LONGER ACCESS GMAIL if you are using the Less Secure Apps option in the Gmail security settings. Sorry about that.

    Well, for whatever reason, I just added my mobile number to my 2-step verification for that last gmail address. And this time the text message with the verification code went through fine with no problem. So I was able to

    REMOVE

    my landline as one of the verification phone numbers for that account, so that all of my gmail accounts are now standardized on my mobile number as the go-to location for verification codes and they are all configured to send texts, not make voice calls.

    I'm thinking perhaps google doesn't allow more than five verification codes to be broadcast within a short period of time.

    And now we sit back and we wait. Midnight on the Pacific Coast is now three hours away. When I wake up tomorrow morning (I'm on the East Coast), will all be normal with my Windows Live Mail client? Or will I be cut off from all of my six gmail addresses??? It will be interesting to see!

    Well, I think I'm O.K., at least so far. I changed all of the gmail accounts I use in Windows Live Mail to 2-step verify, and I added an app password for Windows Live Mail to every one of them. And Windows Live Mail is still picking up the email messages fine. So I think I'm good to go --

    -- at least until midnight Pacific when we'll see if this did the trick.

    One slightly disturbing peculiarity.

    For 2-Step Verification, I picked my mobile phone number and selected the text option, rather than the phone call option.

    There were six gmail accounts for which I had to do this procedure.

    On the sixth account, Google REFUSED to send either a text message or a voice call to my mobile number! All I got, every time, was the message "Something went wrong. Try again." So I requested a voice call to my landline and that went through fine.

    But if I hadn't happened to have a landline I would have been screwed. Why is Google suddenly refusing to send anything to my mobile number?????

    It looks like your proposal is going to work!

    I just turned on 2-step and added an app password for my LEAST IMPORTANT Gmail account in Windows Live Mail --

    -- And it worked like a charm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Now we just have to hope that it will work when the clock strikes midnight Pacific time tonight!

    Now I got a lot of work to do! Lots of email addresses I have to reconfigure!
