Gmail using Windows Live Mail after May 30, 2022

Can someone tell me how to set up to use Windows Live Mail for Gmail after the May 30, 2022 Gmail changes. There is something I have read about "app passwords" which sounds a lot like what Yahoo has done. I have about 75 clients who use WLM. Most of them have Gmail accounts.

I would rather not have to switch to a different mail client.

I would appreciate very much if someone could provide a step by step how to. I suspect there are several millions others like us.

Here's the procedure outlined by Kevin, as an edited quote, derived from several of his messages:

"Came across a work around which I hope will keep working come June 1st.

You need to go into your Google account and it is under Security. Turn on "2 Step Authentication" for each Gmail account and then add an App Password for WLM. You just need to generate the App Password from Google Security and then use that when you update your email ie send/ receive in your WLM. When you update your email ie send/ receive in WLM it will prompt you for this password instead of your Gmail password. The option to turn on/off Less Secure Apps in my security settings disappeared once I turned on 2 Step Authentication."

The previous version of this message also linked to a third video which I thought MIGHT also have a good solution but IT DID NOT. Which is why I've removed that third link. Specifically, you can NO LONGER ACCESS GMAIL if you are using the Less Secure Apps option in the Gmail security settings. Sorry about that.

    Why do they always dump the good stuff? Grrr

    Well, I got the app passwords set up, so I am also crossing fingers.

    I have tried a couple other programs thru the years, inc Thunderbird, and I agree: NOTHING beats WLM. And email on Google's site? NO THANK YOU! That's the worst!

    Hi. re Windows Live Mail & Gmail. Sorry if this is a bit late for some people but better late than never.

    In absence of any definite answer to this problem being available (I searched!), I just waited for the day in question -

    which in my case was June 2nd when WLM failed by rejection of my current passwords.

    I logged directly into each of my GMAIL acounts in turn via browser and followed the instructions to switch on

    "2 Step authentication" and "Create an App Password". (All documented online in various places and easy enough to find).

    In each case I ended up with a new 4x4 alphabetic lower case character App Password - e.g. qwer tyui asdf ghjk

    I went back to WLM and went into settings for each GMAIL account and changed the existing "personal" password to

    the new "App Password".

    I then restarted WLM and everything went back to normal - no login failures and emails have arriving OK ever since.

    My PC setup is not unusual in any way so I would expect this to work for most other people. If you have several GMAIL

    addresses, it can obviously take a while but works in the end.

    Issues? Logging into GMAIL directly in the browser now results in 2 Step authentication sending text a code to my Phone.

    I was the my old personal passwords at the time. I suspect that using the new App Password instead may stop this

    need for Phone & texts. Will trial it and (probably) report back.

    I lost my gmail on 7th.

    Found this thread and followed the instructions on youtube today.

    I am using imap.gmail.com for incoming mail and smtp.gmail.com for outgoing mail.

    The port server for outgoing is set at 25.

    The port for incoming is set at 995.

    As soon as I changed the password to the app password, the emails came flooding in.

    Also, as long as the email provider provides POP or IMAP , and most do, you can use WLM to get mail from that provider.

    Check with your website service. It is likely the deal you have includes email service. You may need some technical help in setting it up, but that would work great for you. Those emails can also feed into WLM.

    Gmail is far and away the most popular free email service, but it is far from the best.
