Brand new Dell XPS laptop with Windows 11. It will not search text within PDF files. From looking on the internet seems like there are lots of problems Windows Search in Windows 11 which did not exist in Windows 10. Including not searching/indexing contents of PDF files, which is critical for me.

Has ANYONE been able to search within PDF files on Windows 11?

Please don't suggest re-indexing, have done 6 or 7 times. And, yes indexing settings are set to index contents of PDF files.

PDF Indexing is working on Windows 11 (even with the standard PDF indexer), however, you can only search for file contents via File Explorer and not via Search / Taskbar Search.

Tell me if this worked ok :

    • use Windows Search to find text in multiple PDF files in Windows 10/11. For this purpose, however, you need to have a special plugin installed – PDF IFilter – which is used by Windows Search to index the contents of your files.

In order to enable the search in PDF files, follow these steps:

    1. From the Control Panel open “Indexing Options” and click on the “Advanced” button.

    2. You'll see a pop-up where you'll have to click on the “File Types” tab and search for the “pdf” option in the list.

    3. If next to "pdf" option you see the text "Reader Search Handler," then PDF IFilter is installed. Click on the "pdf" option to select it.

    4. Click on the "Index Properties and File Contents" button at the bottom. Now you can use Windows Search for PDF files.

(IFilter is from Ado b...e , you could look the internet to download it).

From this point on, searching in your PDF files is a dream come true.

(otherwise, with all the time you took fixing that, and the unpleasant frustration we could feel emanating from an ''border understandable'' issue, you should have re-installed all your system. Have I could read now, that, the solution to what you described had all been given, either there is a piece of information not provided, or it's a problem 18'' ;). Hope it had been resolved since then, and that you're thankful to those you tried to help you. Like I, who is not working for Microsoft but gave some of my time, trying to help out another one in need. If we want peace, I'll have to be made on purpose. So I am waiting for you to get back with a proper manner to thank does who gave time, and tried for you to help you in your BIG ENDEAVOR. Got it !

    Peace.

Hey MattBK - yes, it is what you're talking about

    I'm using: Win 10 Version 21H2 (OS Build 19044.1865) . . . but . . .

1.) It is not an OS issue

2.) Correct: It is not a PDF issue

. . . but, an issue of what the "PDF handler GUID" is set to . . . please see my post above

You're not able to find any docx files either? What's the "Filter Description" in Indexing Options? It has to be using something that is non-native Windows. Check out the noggle link above.

I do not believe that mb1280’s issue is my issue. Windows 11 was (is still?) not searching any files including docx files. It’s not a PDF issue.
