Registry Editor Problem

I may have made a bad mistake with my Lenovo desktop computer.

I wanted to change my User name in Win 10 Explorer so I checked YouTube for a possible answer. I chose to find my User name in the Registry: HKey_Local_Machine: Software\Microsoft: Windows NT: ProfilesList: ProfileImagePath: C:\Users(name is in this location)

I changed the name in this location, closed everything out, and rebooted.

When my Win10 sign in page showed, I put my password in . . . . and it wouldn't accept it.

I get the following message:

The User Profile Service failed the sign-in.

User profile cannot be loaded.

I'm trying to find a way into the Registry to correct my mistake, but can't find a way to do it.

I have tried to access the Safe Mode option, but it won't allow me.

Also tried to access Command Prompt (Dos), but it also asks me for my password.

Anyone out there have any advice on how I can access my Registry, or is my only option to reinstall the OS and lose my Apps and Data.

    ... I only made a 1 word, 5 letter change ...

You can lock yourself out with a single tick mark, if it's in the wrong place. And, frankly, we don't know what state your computer was in before you made this change.

This is another situation where backing up can be a life-saver. If you had a backup to restore, you could be back at work in minutes like nothing happened, even if Windows is completely pooched.

Do you not have another user account on the computer? Every Windows PC needs to have at least two user accounts: One is the Administrator account, which you only use in situations where you need elevated privileges. The other is a Standard account, which is what you use for your day-to-day computing and where you store your personal files.

With no other user account and no backup to restore, I'm afraid to say that you're like a trapeze artist working without a net. The next best thing to do is to show your PC to a professional (vs. Best Buy) who can work on your computer and try to get you back in. If all else fails, they will backup your personal files (using methods I'm not allowed to write about) and do a clean install.

For now, I think your first priority should be to protect your personal files. Don't lose those. Then you can decide whether you want a professional to see your PC, or to keep soldiering on yourself.

    Hello again, Greg

I have been going through your suggestion points with the following results:

    1. I have already pursued this direction with no luck because it is asking me for my password, which is the problem, especially for the Command Prompt. FYI. I do not have Bit Locker enabled.

    Option 1 & 2 require a password.

Option 3 - Do not understand the concept of dual boot. My Window OS on all previous computers are OEM so I'm not sure if these qualify and I don't have a Win10 disc.

Option 4 - No recovery drive.

    Option 5 -No USB installation.

Option 6 - Accomplished the procedure six times, but no WinRE.

Option 7 - Cannot access Command Prompt without password.

    1. I have downloaded the (Win10_21H2_English_x64.iso) onto a USB Thumb Drive, but not sure how to use it. Sorry, but not sure if I plug it into another Win10 computer and get something from the OS, or does it go into my computer to boot. I can get into my Lenovo Bios by pressing the Enter key during Start Up.

FYI. I just put a new HD in my computer about 2 weeks ago, so my System is very clean at the moment. I did not like the assigned User name so I mistakenly try to tweak and change it in the Registry.

I am very grateful for your help and knowledge.

    Gerdi -

It's obvious you need Step 3 to create bootable media which is the only repair method that doesn't require a password. I give detailed instructions there how to create the bootable media, how to boot it and then the numbered list of repairs to try which now dont' require a password and may work better than the onboard repair mode you already tried.

So please go back and follow the steps I gave, then if you get stuck just ask back and I'll guide you further.

If you have your files backed up you could skip to Option 7 to do the Clean Install which shows you everything that works best in Windows 10 and is such a great learning experience in itself if is worth doing it over. You will get and keep the best possible install to the exact extent you stick with the steps, tools and methods in the linked tutorial.

If you don't have your files backed up it shows how to use the bootable media to do so in Option 8.
