2021-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5003173) Failed to install - 0x800f0831

Hi all,

I've had the same cumulative update error for last month where the installation of this update would cause it to work up to 20% and then fail to install.

I've tried using sfc scanning and DISM restore and nothing is wrong with my computer.

This time the update installs to 100%, but then goes back to 0% and gets an error at 21% of the update.

EDIT 1:

I suspect that using a third party software called advanced system care may have cleaned up old driver packages, but I don't believe it affected the update because I've been using it for a while now and I didn't have any cumulative update problems in the past. Manually installing the updates do not work, neither does expanding the MSU files. The 0x800f0831 error has to do with missing package files.

EDIT 2:

I have done a repair install and it fixed my windows update problems, there does not seem to be any other way to fix the error.

EDIT 3:

I noticed my computer was stuttering and freezing much more than usual, so I booted into UEFI settings to put everything to default to see if that fixed it, my fans went full speed in BIOS mode for some reason. After settings are put to default, I restart my computer and now it's in an automatic repair loop.

EDIT 4:

The system restore was successful, but the real reason was because my laptop can not boot into default RST mode, so I booted into AHCI and it worked fine.

The only problem now is the quality update KB4023057 downloads and installs briefly every time I check for updates even though it was already successfully installed and updates the date it was installed.

EDIT 5: After downloading a .bat file from Reset Windows Update in Windows 10 | Tutorials (tenforums.com) and running it in safe mode the popup no longer shows up for KB4023057.

I see, thanks. A RI is the last and best resort to fix this issue.

Try doing a repair install. A repair Install keeps everything including Files and applications and reinstalls Windows.

    Ideally, it should not.But if the PC is otherwise working fine(except stuttering), I don't think an action is required.

    I highly encourage you to send a bug report to the engineers though.

    Re: BIOS Settings, I am not the right person to advise on the hardware side of things. I suggest opening a new thread at a hardware-specific forum like Tom's hardware who would have better ideas.

    I think I solve the problem using a different method, my windows update should be fine now I hope.

    Sorry for so many replies, but do you still know about C-state in BIOS settings and how it can be optimally set up?

    I found this article a while back and I think it may be ok to have the update install multiple times but 

    I'm not sure: KB4023057 installed twice - Microsoft Community

    The same case for me the update cannot be uninstalled through programs, and is found to be

    successfully installed once in quality updates.

    Is the last reply true and should I not worry if KB4023057 installs and downloads every time I check 

    updates?

    Also do you know anything about C-states in BIOS settings and how changing it might affect

    stuttering?

    This may only happen at random times, so far my computer is working fine again but stutter gets 

    worse at random as well. I would not go back to my previous state as I have already deleted the files and get the same error I had before. I've run startup repair when it was in a loop, so I don't think it will do much.

    I will wait for the quality update and hopefully it may fix somethings.

    If I wanted to prevent stuttering would you suggest I disable C-state?
