Ok, well, finally got the PC to boot into safe mode. It accepted my password after I decided to go ahead and change it through my phone even though the password was correct. So I've gotten into safe mode, deleted all the folders in software distribution, rebooted, tried to install the updates again but same problem still. It cannot complete the updates and back to undoing all the changes. So what now please?

I say to give up. Windows doesn't deserve your time. If you try again: In safe mode: First, Shutdown the processes that maintain shadows of the files on that folder. The processes are bits and wuauserv Second, Get rid of the Software Distribution folder as whole, not only the content in it. Third, go through that list of commands from my opening post (DISM, SFC, etc. you'll need to research a little about these commands) There's also that update troubleshooter , from the same list of mine, to try

Solution: So I waited a month and everything installed fine on my PC, BUT my notebook 'suddenly' developed the same problem. I didn't want to wait another month for this. So, I happened upon a post (for which I will summarise) that absolutely solved this problem instantly, as well as the problem of update installation sticking (mine was stuck on 49%). It is an audio driver - namely 'conexant'. Method: Hit the windows key on your keyboard, type 'device manager'. When the window of the devices list opens, scroll down to 'sound, video and game controllers'. Click on that . If you see conexant there, right click and choose 'uninstall driver'. If it prompts you to 'delete device driver software' check that box too. Now disconnect from the internet, - because otherwise it will auto-install the driver on reboot. Now reboot. Reconnect to the internet, go to windows update and run the update again. May I say - hallelujah!

If you tried everything and it didn't work, leave as it is for a month (pause/schedule the updates)

The succeeding updates usually get the problem fixed

Welcome to the Microsoft Community!

1-Restart the computer and continue pressing the F8 or Shift + F8 key; the advanced boot screen will open in front of you.

2- Now select "Choose an option" and choose the "Solve problems" option, then go to "Advanced options" and press the number corresponding to Safe mode.

3- After booting the system in safe mode, open the command prompt and run these commands

net stop wuauserv

4- Now you need to go to a mass distribution and delete your content. Go to the next path to find a mass distribution.

C: Windows SoftwareDistribution
Delete all files and subfolders in this folder.

Now restart your computer and the updates could not be completed. Undo changes, do not turn off the computer in Windows 10 will be fixed.

Try the steps above in safe mode.

If it doesn't work, try the solutions below:

If you have an antivirus installed or more than one, I suggest you uninstall it through the Control Panel under the Programs and Features icon or temporarily disable it through the antivirus settings itself.

Note: Many antiviruses have their own removal tool. Visit the Installed Software website for more information. Your system will not be left unprotected because Windows has its own security system that automatically enables it as soon as you restart your computer.

Perform troubleshooting:

1- Go to search, type in troubleshooting and open troubleshooting.
2- Select Show all in the left panel.
3- Open Windows Update and follow further instructions.
4- Restart your computer and try to install the update again.

Hide Windows update

1- Open the Control Panel and click the Windows Update icon.
2- After Windows updates or you check for updates, click link ... update (s) is available.
3- Right-click on a listed Windows Update that you want to hide, then click Hide Update.
4- If prompted by UAC, then click Yes or enter the administrator password.
5- You will now notice that the Windows Update eyepiece is grayed out. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to hide another Windows Update. When finished, click / tap OK.
