I have also followed all the steps with no luck. I can live without updates generally, but the failed Windows update broke the Windows audio system completely and the 'undoing changes' left it broken. I have done all the driver uninstalls/reinstalls. The drivers are fine, but Windows sees nothing. How do I know the drivers are fine? Because Reaper, Vegas Pro, Finale, Aria Player, etc., work by bypassing Windows audio and using the audio drivers directly. Those devices include Focusrite USB, ATEM Mini, and Blackmagic Design. Windows shows no choices. Reaper, Vegas, Finale, etc., show all choices. The main problem for me is that I teach remotely using Skype and Zoom, but those programs depend on Windows audio. So now in order to teach I have kluged together a mess of Nokia phone, Samsung tablet, and Window desktop -- the latter used now only for visual screen sharing via the ATEM Mini.

Thank you so much but clarification, no need to do the cmd guys. You just need to delete the files and folders inside of SoftwareDistribution in safemode because deleting them in not safemode. You can't actually do thst because of the restriction that. I also deleted my trash file that cant be deleted in normal mode. Tysm my first time exploring in my pc and it works well.

I've lost an entire work day trying to resolve this problem with zero success. I've tried all the steps listed in this thread, both removing contents from the SoftwareDistribution folder (in Safe Made), disabling and re-enabling 'Pause Updates', tried the command prompt steps (as Administrator). Each time I've rebooted and tried to install the 21H1 KB5005565 updates. Each time the update install, then gives me the error message upon rebooting. Time is money and I've lost a days worth, not to mention the strain on my blood pressure. I will go through my primary applications tomorrow and make sure they are functioning. If the apps are working, I'll disable Updates until a new OS is released by Microsoft (and cross my fingers and pray).

Basically, people

If you tried everything and it didn't work, leave as it is for a month (pause/schedule the updates)

The succeeding updates usually get the problem fixed

Welcome to the Microsoft Community!

1-Restart the computer and continue pressing the F8 or Shift + F8 key; the advanced boot screen will open in front of you.

2- Now select "Choose an option" and choose the "Solve problems" option, then go to "Advanced options" and press the number corresponding to Safe mode.

3- After booting the system in safe mode, open the command prompt and run these commands

net stop wuauserv

4- Now you need to go to a mass distribution and delete your content. Go to the next path to find a mass distribution.

C: Windows SoftwareDistribution
Delete all files and subfolders in this folder.

Now restart your computer and the updates could not be completed. Undo changes, do not turn off the computer in Windows 10 will be fixed.

Try the steps above in safe mode.

If it doesn't work, try the solutions below:

If you have an antivirus installed or more than one, I suggest you uninstall it through the Control Panel under the Programs and Features icon or temporarily disable it through the antivirus settings itself.

Note: Many antiviruses have their own removal tool. Visit the Installed Software website for more information. Your system will not be left unprotected because Windows has its own security system that automatically enables it as soon as you restart your computer.

Perform troubleshooting:

1- Go to search, type in troubleshooting and open troubleshooting.
2- Select Show all in the left panel.
3- Open Windows Update and follow further instructions.
4- Restart your computer and try to install the update again.

Hide Windows update

1- Open the Control Panel and click the Windows Update icon.
2- After Windows updates or you check for updates, click link ... update (s) is available.
3- Right-click on a listed Windows Update that you want to hide, then click Hide Update.
4- If prompted by UAC, then click Yes or enter the administrator password.
5- You will now notice that the Windows Update eyepiece is grayed out. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to hide another Windows Update. When finished, click / tap OK.
