Microsoft will fix it themselves. If you think this is something YOU are supposed to solve I have a bridge to sell to you. I've been using Windows since the 90s. What is happening with Update in recent months is NOT normal. It is 100% Microsoft's fault and has absolutely nothing to do with what you are doing (including third party antivirus). This is just the incompetence of Microsoft and at some point too many will suffer so the goons will get their act together and fix it in the next update. I've always been baffled by how bad windows updates are. It's really inexplicable. I have been using Linux (fedora distro) for decades, and have never had this kind of insanity with updates and upgrades. To me it seems microsoft has spent the last 20 years placing a nice looking GUI on top of an update system that's as bad as it's ever been. Obtuse and ridiculously vague and hard to find error reports, and absurdly long update times. It puzzles me how a company with the resources they have can't make a better update system.

No, it didn't boot. I had to get the Win 10 installation media to do a repair in order to be able to boot it up again. Once I rebooted, I see that the C partition is marked as active, so the problem seems like it might not be related to making that change. It seems no one else is seeing this behavior, so it was probably just some issue with my system.

I've lost an entire work day trying to resolve this problem with zero success. I've tried all the steps listed in this thread, both removing contents from the SoftwareDistribution folder (in Safe Made), disabling and re-enabling 'Pause Updates', tried the command prompt steps (as Administrator). Each time I've rebooted and tried to install the 21H1 KB5005565 updates. Each time the update install, then gives me the error message upon rebooting. Time is money and I've lost a days worth, not to mention the strain on my blood pressure. I will go through my primary applications tomorrow and make sure they are functioning. If the apps are working, I'll disable Updates until a new OS is released by Microsoft (and cross my fingers and pray).

If you tried everything and it didn't work, leave as it is for a month (pause/schedule the updates)

The succeeding updates usually get the problem fixed

Welcome to the Microsoft Community!

1-Restart the computer and continue pressing the F8 or Shift + F8 key; the advanced boot screen will open in front of you.

2- Now select "Choose an option" and choose the "Solve problems" option, then go to "Advanced options" and press the number corresponding to Safe mode.

3- After booting the system in safe mode, open the command prompt and run these commands

net stop wuauserv

4- Now you need to go to a mass distribution and delete your content. Go to the next path to find a mass distribution.

C: Windows SoftwareDistribution
Delete all files and subfolders in this folder.

Now restart your computer and the updates could not be completed. Undo changes, do not turn off the computer in Windows 10 will be fixed.

Try the steps above in safe mode.

If it doesn't work, try the solutions below:

If you have an antivirus installed or more than one, I suggest you uninstall it through the Control Panel under the Programs and Features icon or temporarily disable it through the antivirus settings itself.

Note: Many antiviruses have their own removal tool. Visit the Installed Software website for more information. Your system will not be left unprotected because Windows has its own security system that automatically enables it as soon as you restart your computer.

Perform troubleshooting:

1- Go to search, type in troubleshooting and open troubleshooting.
2- Select Show all in the left panel.
3- Open Windows Update and follow further instructions.
4- Restart your computer and try to install the update again.

Hide Windows update

1- Open the Control Panel and click the Windows Update icon.
2- After Windows updates or you check for updates, click link ... update (s) is available.
3- Right-click on a listed Windows Update that you want to hide, then click Hide Update.
4- If prompted by UAC, then click Yes or enter the administrator password.
5- You will now notice that the Windows Update eyepiece is grayed out. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to hide another Windows Update. When finished, click / tap OK.
