09 March 2021 - Windows update - KB5000802

We've been having some crashes in relation to the latest Windows update KB5000802 which are causing users to experience BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), see image below:

I've collected some data from the minidump file as to which drivers could be causing this to happen and the same three have been picked up on several computers facing this problem.

win32kfull.sys

win32kbase.sys

ntoskrnl.exe

So far the trigger to the BSOD with the current Windows update version has been:

  • Visio 365, when the user loads up a file and selects "File"
  • when a user tries to print something and it tries to load the print preview window

Our current solution to this problem has been to uninstall Update KB5000802 from the Windows Update Settings -> View Update History -> Uninstall updates

If Microsoft could please shed some light on this particular issue or if there's info on an upcoming fix release, that would be very much appreciated.

    Several of our clients have experienced BSOD every time they try to print to any Kyocera printer after update installed. IF WE MERELY REMOVE THE PROBLEM UPDATE AND GET THE PRINTERS WORKING AGAIN, THE UPDATE FORCE-INSTALLS AGAIN NEXT DAY AND WITH IT THE BSOD RETURNS.

    Accordingly, this is the approach we are now taking:

    1. Apply update-disabling policy hack detailed below
    2. Uninstall KB5000802, then reboot
    3. If still unable to print, then remove and reinstall affected printer(s)

    DISABLE W10 UPDATES PERMANENTLY

    Open Start.
    Search for gpedit.msc and click the top result to launch the Local Group Policy Editor.
    Navigate to the following path:

    Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

    Double-click the Configure Automatic Updates policy on the right side.

    Check the Disabled option to turn off the policy and disable automatic updates permanently.

    Click the Apply button.
    Click the OK button.

    After you complete the steps, Windows 10 will stop downloading updates automatically on the device. However, the ability to check for updates manually will continue to be available in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. While on the page, you need to click the Check for updates button to download and install the most recent patches.

    If you want to re-enable automatic updates on the device, you can use the same instructions outlined above, but on step No. 5, make sure to select the Not Configured option.

    Why are there several posts about disabling all updates or postponing all updates!?

    Yesterday in this thread I posted the PowerShell command to hide a specific update.

    MS also has a Fixit you can download to hide a specific update Hide Windows Updates or driver updates (microsoft.com).

    Or you can use a third party tool called Windows Update Minitool to hide specific updates https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/windows_update_minitool.html

    Stop using a sledgehammer to drive a nail.

    Because there are other updates causing same issue. Some of our clients' PC's required uninstalling KB5000808 and KB5000908 (those PC's did not not have the notorious KB5000802 update, but still had the printing BSOD issue).

    Our clients - not wanting to pay our hourly emergency rate every time a new update cripples their workflow, are opting for us to disable all Microsoft updates altogether until further notice.

    Seems to me that would require a second (on the clock) session to enable the updates again when this all blows over. I stand by my statement, but you do what you want.

    We have uninstalled the update and it keeps getting reinstalled to those users every day. Suggestions?
