From the Desk of the Uninformed: RE: Windows updates: I run windows 10 HOME 20H2 - no-name Desktop (Forgive long Post)
I normally operate from a "Local User" Non Admin Account (for my own safety 😃 )
When I updated from version 1909 to 20H2.. (THE BIG ONE)--
I knew of this update in advance, so I did the recommended:
Switched to Admin Account: UNINSTALLED my 3rd party anti-virus software, disconnected my
external hard drive, printer, speakers, etc.
Here is my Question now: I have updates paused for 7 days (again, HOME user) --
I und nderstand those with Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, etc. meanwhile, have even more
power to delay things that I do not have.
When I un-pause the update to see if any Quality Updates are available
for download-- it IMMEDIATELY begins the update whether I'm "ready or not."
I've searched and found there are no known lists to give a "heads up" for quality updates that I could find. ugh.
I believe I must still uninstall my anti-virus software for the quality updates--
[unsure about disconnecting hard-drive, printer, etc. but seems like I should]
So.... am I supposed to sign into ADMIN ACCOUNT, uninstall AV software,
disconnect peripherals JUST TO SEE IF UPDATES are available? It seems ludicrous to me to
have to do that! Once the update starts I'm afraid to stop it for fear it will hose something!
When I last updated the recent KB's... I merely paused my AV thinking it would
not take that long, but upon update restarts my AV begins to function again.
Luckily, it did not cause me any problems.... THIS TIME!
Am I missing something obvious here, overthinking it? IDK.
I see people have problems with KB quality updates and are asked if they stopped
their anti-virus software or other programs for cleaning, etc.
I have other cleaning/scanning programs installed, but none that run in real-time but for my anti-virus.
Would be nice to have a button that I could press that says:
"Give me 20 minutes before beginning the DL so I can switch to Admin Account and uninstall all my ****.
Is there an answer to this dilemma? Would appreciate any feedback from those who know. Thanks Much!
