Computer "stutters" after Windows 10 update (20H2 update 19042.868)

Hello

I face again an issue  on my desktop since Windows 10 20H2 update. Stuttering twice per second : mouse move is blocked for an instant, video and sound stutter constantly. Computer not usable anymore except for basic functions.

I tried many things , including updating drivers , removing almost all old software, clean restart etc... following advices from other threads. Task manager "processus" tab shows it comes from high level of  "system interrupt" ("Interruptions systeme" in French) .I could not determine the root cause.

Note also  stutter disappear completely after rollback to Windows 10 previous version. However staying in previous Windows 10 version is not sustainable : we are currently forced to update .

Note that stutters is still present after safe boot restart.

Eventually I got rid of the stutter temporarily (comes again every few minutes instead of twice per second)  after a SAFE BOOT restart (msconfig / start)  followed immediately by a NORMAL RESTART . I do not dare to restart normally again, so I use the "sleep" (mise en veille in French) mode at night to keep it workable.

PLEASE MICROSOFT do your upmost to deliver fix ! Do you have another suggestion ?

Best regards to all

Hi,

I found the same problem right after the update KB4589212.  Not sure if this is the sole source of the issue. In any event, I disabled the CD/DVD drive and the problem disappeared. Re-enable CD/DVD still working - this happened more than once - as I purged the system trying to find the hiccup.   Also noted a marked slow down of the system - editing e-mail...writing this note, etc...

Kind regards,

DBN

Hey Druid,

I created an account just to thank you.

After I updated to 20H2, my company has been stuttering non stop and cant even do the bare minimum stuff without feeling frustrated.
Went through weeks of guide and advice on how to solve it but it did not work.  Until I chance upon your answer. I was like thinking, how can a CD/DVD drive be affecting the whole computer, i was like what the hell what do i have to lose. the instant I disabled the drive, the whole com was back to normal.

Thank you so much! I was almost contemplating to do a fresh boot or even purchasing a new computer.

Regards.

    • Hey guys, how are you? After breaking my head with this problem and looking for answers for weeks I finally found the root of the problem which is the IDE ATA / ATAPI Controller
    • The fix is as follows: Go to Device Manager> IDE ATA / ATAPI controllers> click on AMD SATA controller> update driver> Search for Drivers on my computer> Allow me to choose from a list of Drivers available on my computer> Both options appear, choose DEFAULT AHCI SATA CONTROLLER and finish with NEXT

    • Okay, PROBLEM SOLVED ... Bye, bye STUTTERS :)

This fixed the problem for me but I have an Intel controller.

You don't want the latest drivers. Don't let it autorun the driver update. You want to rollback to the latest Default Controller provided by Windows, not the latest one provided by the manufacturer.

    Hi,

I haven't seen a "fix" either, but I no longer see the problem as well.

    A little history:

I was not able to update the system - in fact, the update locked-up at 94% for many hours (I left it running over night). A hard reset caused loss of data, real nasty - about one-year of e-mails and for an academic, that did pose a problem.

Multiple stuttering problems - the "DVD" removal helped a lot as did switching to a static background screen.

After many weeks of "getting by" - I finally reset the system - using Windows - it removed all of the add-in programs (I kept a record of the licenses) and re-installed the latest version of Windows. I reinstalled the missing programs, e.g., Office amongst many others.

    No More problems.

I am speculating that with all of the installed an uninstalled programs (lots of tinkering...) - the mess left behind needed a good purge (bad program hygiene...?)

    Kind regards,

    DBN aka John

    Hello Greg

Glad it solved it for you as it did for me. For my case it 's been a few weeks since I did not experience the "DVD stutter" anymore. Is it by chance ? Did Microsoft do anything ? How about the other victims ?
