Windows 10 2004 Update – Sleep Mode Issue and Workaround

Since I installed Windows 10 2004 Update, Windows doesn’t wake up from sleep mode correctly.

I can login as expected, display and cursor are reactive until I try to open the first program/app the blue circle/wait animation lights up shortly but nothing happens. When I try to open a second program or the same program again, the computer freezes completely. Only a hard shutdown pressing the power button for several seconds will help. When I’m able to press restart, restart will eventually execute but takes awfully long (10 minutes).

  • Hardware is new and shouldn’t be an issue (Dell XPS 15 7590 16GB RAM).
  • All drivers are up to date.
  • It only happens after prolonged sleep (over +/-10 minutes). After very short sleeps, everything runs fine.
  • Small apps like Notepad and Mail are not affected.
  • It could be a graphics issue.
  • I suspect some driver not waking up correctly from sleep mode.
  • Scan disk shows no issues.
  • I tried changing the power plan.
  • I tried resetting the page file.
  • I tried with and without fast startupenabled.
  • I unchecked the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" checkbox of Intel Management Engine Interface as suggested elsewhere.
  • I ran the Windows troubleshooter.

For now, I found the following workaround: Set sleep to ‘Never’ and set what closing the lid/power button does to ‘Hibernate’.

It’s not optimal but for now I’ll wait what future Windows patches and driver update bring. I am not planning on reinstalling Windows or creating a new user account.

Is there anything else I could try?

UPDATES:

A short static of incidents, two weeks into this thread:

  • Dell: 6
  • Microsoft Surface: 3
  • Lenovo: 1

I usually put my computer into sleep around 4-5 times per day. After two weeks of changing from sleep mode to hibernation, I only had the same issue once, and not as severe (after 5-6 hours of hibernation). Programs wouldn’t run, but I was still able to restart my machine normally in that case. Hence, hibernation is a viable workaround.

User Rednax35 identified Malwarebytes as the culprit. After trying it for 24 hours, this solution worked for me, too. That’s why accepted it as valid solution being aware that****it couldn’t fix the problem for all users! I should have checked for antivirus-related causes right away, as they are frequent candidates when things come to an unexpected halt. It would be interesting to hear, if other users had different third-party antivirus programs installed. Some privileges could have been revoked from the OS side with the feature update. I also noted some hiccups with the fingerprint reader which wasn’t always ready when resuming after sleep, which could be worth investigating.

Alright so it's a few days later, and I don't know if this will apply to any of you guys, but apparently what was causing the sleep issues for me was Malwarebytes. I reinstalled Windows and the issues were gone, but as soon as I installed Malwarebytes they came back. Once I uninstalled it, they were gone.

I don't know if this will apply to you guys, but if you do have Malwarebytes I'd say temporarily uninstall it and see if that fixes the issue, since that's what fixed it for me.

Hello! I am just a normal person currently upgrading but I do have a solution!

Windows 10 2004 is very unstable right now. Many are recommending you do NOT upgrade now. Many drivers have not been released. There are steps to take before updating and steps after. I (again) do not recommend upgrading now but if you have to here are some steps to fix your issue. (WARNING: You may not end up with Windows 10 Version 2004 at the end of these steps) (WARNING: Step 1 is quite long but it is recommended that you read it as it contains information about what to buy for external storage, alternatives and why you may avoid using a USB)

    Steps to make before upgrading:

1: Buy a USB or any other external storage (Recommended for things like documents for a company or bills but you may use it for personal use) (You can also use things like network drives and online storage but these are a bit less reliable however Onedrive, google drive or mediafire are perfect for quick solutions) (You do not have to use USB or external storage)

2: Backup any important Data on cloud (Personal DATA recommended, like family photos) (If you more than 1 USB drive or any other form of external storage you may use USB)

3: Plug in your USB to move things like documents for a company or bills (you may use it for personal use)

RECOMMENDATION: Upgrade your drivers at this point. Open Windows update and upgrade all but the feature update

4: Open Control Panel (NOT Settings)

5: Type Recovery into search or navigate to it. If you know how to use the navigation bar (I can't remember what it is called so this is my guess) copy and paste this: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Recovery

    6: Click Configure System restore

7: Create a Restore point by clicking Create.

8: Give it a unique description. Then click next/Create

You have made this restore point so we can recover your PC. You now may upgrade.

Lets say you are now having some issues now

    Step 9: Repeat steps 4-6

    Step 10: Click system restore

Step 11: Choose a different restore point and click next.

Step 12: Keep clicking next after you chose your restore point.

Your computer will come back to how it was before.

I will come back tomorrow with some advice on after the update. Hope this Helps - Sean

What does this have to do with the sleep/hibernate issue we're having?

**UPDATE:**It just happened using hibernate instead of sleep, too ! No, complete freeze, but programs would not open and restart was necessary (and possible). Maybe a complete reinstall will be unavoidable, but will it help?
