Windows Booting very slow after 2004 update ,

I've been monitoring this thread and trying certain things that have been said... at first, disabling Sysmain and the index searching made my computer much faster.  But then, after several times of shutting down and starting back up, the issue comes back.  The timing of the performance issue also seems very random... e.g. I can start my computer and before I start any other apps, the issue is there.

But there are also times where I go an entire day, and I don't have the issue.  I do start noticing this issue when I try to open "This PC."  It seems like the system lags trying to find the drives in there.  I've also noticed it starting when I tried to open Task Manager... with either "System Interrupts" or "WMI Provider Host" thrashing the CPU... but then after a while, it simmers down and the system goes back to normal.

At first, I was thinking it was an issue with the VPN that I use because when I start having the issue, and I try to close out Cisco, the program doesn't close for a good minute or so, but that wouldn't explain why the issue is present right when I start the computer (VPN is not opened at this point).  Then I started thinking it may be some sort of network issue... completely disconnecting from my network and rejoining, but I don't think this has helped.  I also have a NAS, but that doesn't reconnect on sign on, so I ruled that out.

I've also tried disabling defrag and running a bunch of other commands listed in this thread but still no fix.  It is good to note that I'm having this issue on my laptop, which doesn't have an SSD.  On my desktop, I do have an SSD, which I have not experienced this issue.

I know none of that really helps this thread, but I wanted to post it so another voice is being heard... it's rather annoying, and I hope they release a fix soon, or are at least aware of it.

I have tried most of these fixes and it worked a bit better. One thing I read on another thread is to look at your virtual memory. If its higher than recommended, change it to custom and use the recommended value. Mine was set way higher automatically, so I changed it to the recommended value and presto. It is much faster. I did not read that in this thread so i hope it can help someone out.

• Recommended: 2891 MB
• Currently Allowed: 8704 MB

FYI: For those who are still getting the slow shutdown/restart/reboot problem, and are concerned, and who are comfortable using the EVENT VIEWER, it might be useful to look at the following sub-tree called Diagnostics-Performance.

The event Viewer is located under Windows Administrative Tools inside the start menu, but you can type that in the search icon.

If you expand the tree view on the left (By clicking the chevron so it points downwards) , under Applications and Service Logs, then expand Microsoft, then scroll down until you see Diagnostics-Performance, you can click on the "operational" item in there, and you should see 200 - 300 or so event items appear in the central display part of the UI.

Here you will find Event ID's 100, 101,103,108, 200 and 203 typically, but you may find more ID's depending on the items that are detectedthat have slowed down your shutdown or boot startup.

If you find that (for instance) you have 2 Anti-Virus products active together, that might cause some interaction and slowness**,**or it might be one of those McAfee scanners that get into Flash updates if you do not remember to untick the "optional download". If there are ANY items that you KNOW you added yourself, but you don't need them for anything important, and they can be safely uninstalled, then check that out. There may be many system critical items logged, for instance Crypt services, or Licencing Services (ClipSVC), so obviously those types of things you CANNOT do without!

If there are any unusual or unexpected items there, do NOT take any actions until you have thoroughly researched them and checked on legitimate Microsoft and other trusted vendor sources before uninstalling or trying to disable anything. If you DO find a legitimate add-in program or service that YOU installed, and it is listed in the Critical Events at this section, check with the software vendor, or if it is a Driver Service (e.g. audiosrv, audioendpointbuilder in the Warnings Events 103) then check your PC/Laptop vendor web-site for updated driver software.

NOTE: I would recommend taking at least a "Restore Point" (or preferably a full backup or system image) before doing ANY significant changes.

HINT: Do NOT do too many changes all at once, best to do test reboots between changes, re-check the event logs.

Still having this issue and nothing I do fixes it.  This is very frustrating and extremely disappointing. I guess I have to do a fresh windows install which I really don't want to do.. More frustrating than I can handle to watch a PCIE 4.0 m.2 nvme ssd take 5-10 minutes after starting to be able to open applications. Microsoft, you really blew it.
