Windows Live Mail cannot display message after Windows 10 update

My laptop recently updated windows 10 (I think #1909) on it's own.  After the update, my Windows Live Mail quit working.  It downloads the message headers/titles, so I know it's connecting to the gmail server, but when I try to open the message, I get the error, "Message Can't be Displayed.  Windows live mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory or disk space and try again."  I have plenty of memory and disk space.  Thanks for any suggestions!  (And yes, I know I should go to a newer email client, but I have too much wrapped up in Windows Live and just want to fix it!)  Rick

    The support ended in 2017, I would recommend you to use windows Mail app instead that comes with windows 10.

    Great solution! Use something else which most people are un-familiar with, offers no additional benefits, and has a massively worse interface! 

    I've had to put up with something other than WLM when using a laptop working away from home. I quickly found that MS just has lost it in the email spectrum.

    And then, today after an update, WLM "encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message". 

    No it F%!"*g didn't. There has been no change in the format of the written word that I'm aware of in the last several centuries. There has been no change since the (significant) dawn of computing in the representation of text as binary digits. All that has changed is a Windows update. And now I can't use the email software I like, and are familiar with. As if 2020 didn't suck enough already.

    MS has a huge enough budget to realise that WLM is used widely still. Because it's actually pretty good. And they should also realise that the next go-to email application isn't their latest mail atrocity. 

    I am fully aware that WLM is out of support. I'm just also very curious as to why. "Because progress" is not ever going to be an argument when the latest email manifestation extruded from the depths of MS is so may times less usable than the previous version.

    First off, it sounds from your correspondence you are probably not experienced enough to be messing with your registry.

    The instructions are clear, I'll try and make them clearer:

    In the registry, find the exact folder below:  Hit the windows button, then type 'regedit' then enter to get into the registry.  Make sure to follow the correct path.

    Computer \ HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows Live Mail

    Create these 3 32-bit DWORD entries by doing the following: (Note, if they already exist, don't create more new ones.  And check your spelling including capital letters.)

    Highlight the WindowsLiveMail folder above, then right click on it.  A menu will appear.  Select New-> DWORD (32 bit)

    This will create a new entry in the bottom of the list on the right called New Value.  Right click this icon, and select 'modify'.

    In the value name field, enter one of the names below EXACTLY as you see it.....without the = 1.  Change the '0' to a 1 in the Value Data box.  Hit ok.

    RecreateFolderIndex = 1

    RecreateStreamIndex = 1

    RecreateUIDLIndex = 1

    Repeat this for the next 2 items.

    *Note, if these DWORDs already appear in the list, don't create a new one, but modify their value to 1.

    Close the registry.  Reboot.

    Restart Windows Live Mail. Then the message display goes back to normal for me and the 3 values ​​in the registry are reset to 0. Can be left as it is.

    No one really knows what will happen if you screwed this up the first time and maybe only entered one or two of the values correctly.  All I can say is, this worked for everyone else that used the method.
