Windows 10 Feature Update 2004 appears to have broken Windows Live Mail

Thank you very much, the solution you suggested worked for me. For other users, here is the solution from WLMUser2020 in English, it is basically editing or creating (editing in my case) three registry entries, so proceed at your own risk.

Close Windows Live Mail.

In the registry under

Computer \ HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows Live Mail

create these 3 DWORD entries (I didn't have them) or change them to 1 if available

RecreateFolderIndex = 1
RecreateStreamIndex = 1
RecreateUIDLIndex = 1

Restart Windows Live Mail. Then the message display goes back to normal for me and the 3 values ​​in the registry are reset to 0. Can be left like this.

For me, the account display in WLM with several accounts after the Windows Update 2004 was corrupt. This is also fixed.

I would still appreciate an official solution or explanation from someone associated with Microsoft as I would think editing registry entries is not the official solution..

On July 3, 2020, ClitheroeKid posted a revised reply to DKO777's post of July 3, 2020 regarding this issue.  ClitheroeKid's revised reply worked perfectly and solved the problem.  However, I am not a computer expert, and have never edited the Registry before.  Therefore, I am submitting this step-by-step expansion of CitheroeKid's advice for others that may be intimidated by the Registry.  This expansion includes a number of the intermediate steps and hopefully will give others the confidence to fix the problem with Windows Live Mail created by Microsoft and the recent Windows 10 update.

Many thanks to ClitheroeKid and DKO777.

1. Close Windows Live Mail.  (And any other programs.)  You should be on the Desktop.
2. Click the Search icon (a magnifying glass), next to Start, lower left.
3. At the bottom of the page, in the box that has a magnifying glass and says "Type here to search", type "run".
4. "Run" should come up as Best Match.  Click on it.
5. The "Run" dialog box appears.  In the box following the word "Open", type in "regedit".  (Your last search may still be in the box; just delete or overtype it.)
6. A warning appears: "Do you want to allow this App to make changes ...?"  Click Yes.
7. You're now in the Registry Editor, in the Windows Registry.
8. In the Windows Registry, open this key:

Computer \ HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows Live Mail.

(You start at the top and click on each of the above titles (the "keys") just like you go through folders in File Explorer, until you open the "Windows Live Mail" key.)

9. Create these three DWORD entries in the "Windows Live Mail" key:

RecreateFolderIndex = 1

RecreateStreamIndex = 1

RecreateUIDLIndex = 1

The next three steps explain how to create the above three DWORD entries:

10. Once you're in the Windows Live Mail key, go to the menu at the top and click on "Edit", slide down to "New", slide over and down on the submenu and select "DWORD (32 bit) value".
11. A box will appear with the words "New Value #1".  Overtype this with the first new DWORD name (only) above.  As for the "=1": In the third column, "Data", a bunch of zeros appears, at the end of which is "(0)".  Change the (0) to (1).  This is the "= 1" referenced above.
12. Repeat steps 10 and 11 for the other two DWORD entries.
13. Close the Registry Editor window.

Make CERTAIN that you create DWORD entries. There are several other types: this solution FAILS if you create the wrong type.

14. Restart your computer. This step is ESSENTIAL. Windows will only re-load the registry when Windows itself starts.
15. Start Windows Live Mail.

Then the message display should be back to normal, and those 3 values in the registry should have reset themselves to 0 (and can be left like that).

Step 14 is essential.

If the foregoing does not fix the problem, you have made a mistake:

1. You have created the wrong type of entry in step 10 (you should have created DWORD entries); or
2. You have failed to restart the computer (restarting Windows Live Mail alone is not enough).

This is my revised advice, taking account of the above (with thanks to DKO777).

1. Close Windows Live Mail.
2. In the Windows registry, open this key:

   Computer \ HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows Live Mail

3. Create these three DWORD entries in that key:

   RecreateFolderIndex = 1

   RecreateStreamIndex = 1

   RecreateUIDLIndex = 1

DKO777's message of June 16 (2020) has helped me, thanks a lot... If someone does not speak German or if the description is not clear for non-experts, here I tell you :

Press Windows key + R to open a Run box, type regedit (registry editor) and press enter.

On the left column look for HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder, in it look for SOFTWARE folder, in it Microsoft folder, and in it Windows Live Mail folder and click on it (path : Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail).

On the top bar menu, click on Edit, then select New, then select DWORD value (32 bit).

Rename the new value to RecreateFolderIndex.

Right click on the value by the mouse, then select Modify. Give 1 to the value.

You repeat twice the same but with different names :

On the top bar menu, click on Edit, then select New, then select DWORD value (32 bit).

Rename the new value to RecreateStreamIndex.

Right click on the value by the mouse, then select Modify. Give 1 to the value.

On the top bar menu, click on Edit, then select New, then select DWORD value (32 bit).

Rename the new value to RecreateUIDLIndex.

Right click on the value by the mouse, then select Modify. Give 1 to the value.

Close it, close and restart WLM and it will work.
