Cortana can't control music.

This resolution is not for the Cortana app that comes with Windows 10 2004 (19041.388) 

1. Open Cortana.
2. Select Notebook , then Music. - Does not exist in the new Cortana...
3. Choose Spotify, and enter your account information. Or, create an account. - This step does not help without previous step.

There are no additional settings that indicate Notebook nor music.

There also are no additional options for Music anywhere within settings:

Cortana has been dumbed down and commonly used features are now gone. Please tell me that you are not going to suggest using Google Home or Amazon Alexa now! lol

I'm having the same issue however I have no intention of EVER using a music service.

I've got 3,000 mp3 recordings in my music directory and both Groove (which I don't use because it isn't reliable) and windows media player to play them.

Cortana, at one time, was able to use windows media player to play local music; then that was broken by updates and the Groove player with its attending service was available.  Grooves attending service went away breaking cortana again leaving us with no way to play local music.

for someone who knows how to write a universal windows program a cortana add in to allow local music playing should be fairly simple.  Unfortunately I've attempted it and despite over 40 years of programming experience have been unable to get anything to work using VS2017.  UWP WORST PLATFORM EVER.

I WILL NEVER USE A MUSIC SERVICE.

I have groove and windows media player installed on my windows 10 pro machine that is all I need to play the over 3000 mp3 I have purchased over the years and reside either directly on a hard drive on my machine or on a network share in my home network.

When Cortana was first released it contained logic that allowed it to play local music using windows media player.

As Groove became more popular (within Microsoft NOT with users) support was added for Groove to play both Groove music service and local music.

As Iheartradio and Spotify became more popular support for all groove services and windows media player were disabled or removed.  THAT'S THE PROBLEM.

I need a way to play local music that DOES NOT DEPEND ON THE INTERNET BEING AVAILABLE.

I have ABSOLUTELY NO USE for a DJ function that does not play ANYTHING I like to listen to.

Cortana needs to be able to use either Groove or windows media player to find and play local music (local meaning not on the internet)

GuyNash - I use both local and subscription based. I am in the same boat as you I have about 50,000 songs on my drive. Yes quite a bit of music. 

My problem is the resolution provided is for an older version of Cortana. Also I am in agreeance that the resolution only provide a solution for subscription services. 

No I do not believe Elise read your post at all. The new Cortana as it is now cannot control any music, subscription or local.

Does not matter what method local or subscription based...

I ask: can you play any music on media player" Reply: "I'm sorry, I can't control your music here."...

I also ask:

1. Not the correct solution for the latest Cortana now appx package. No longer a part of the OS. 

This does not work at all: 

1. Open Cortana.
2. Select Menu , then select Notebook. (Not available for the version 2004 Windows)
3. Select Music, choose Spotify, and enter your account information. Or, create an account. - (Subscription) Does not resolve anything for locally stored music. (Again not available in the new Cortana).

windows 10 2004 has a new Cortana which is independent from the system . it's an app and still in development. controlling music is not yet released.
