Trouble Making Image Backup with Acronia True Image 2016 -- apparent misread of space

I have been trying for days now to make a backup image of my internal Windows 10 hard drive, fully updated to current Windows 10 level May 2020. I have been using Acronis True Image 2016, as I always do. I have been backing up to an external, USB2 connected hard drive with 160 GB of free space on it (a 320 GB hard drive), the same drive I normally backup to. This is a Gateway laptop, NE56R from 2012, which shipped with Windows 8.

I have been trying to backup all partitions, including the C, and recovery partitions (including the Push Button one, which is about 15 GB) and whatever others are there. In total, they are about 109 GB. So I ought to have plenty enough free space.

I have checked all partitions to back up with True Image. It runs the whole backup, takes a good five hours. At the end, it throws up amessage saying ther eis not enough space for the image.

I have never had this problem before. The machine is booted from the True Image disk, so that should rule out some issue wiht my Widows 10 OS. I am doing a full disk backup, and I am even using Maximum Compression, which is what I always use, so I should need something lessthatn 109 GB of free space. and Ihave 160 GB of free space on the external drive.

I have a backup of Win 10 I made in April, shortly before the new OS level cam out on the drive -- I always keep two, just because. I deleted the older of the two on there, so now have only the one. I certainly don't want to delete the one on there, and still have this problem but no backup at all. But Ihave more free space than shudbe needed.

The external drive has been used only for backups since I started using it brand new, and I make a backup once or twice a year -- and I have been using it no more than four years. So, the external drive has very little, hardly any actual use on it, it is not far from brand new.

I read something this morning about a real problem found in the new Win 10 update, something to do with Storage Space, that is some sort of function in the OS now. I don't know what that is, or what it does. But the story said if your drive is not showing as RAW, then it should be OK, not affected. I checked Disk Management, and none of my volumes nor the external drive are marked as RAW. So, that should mean that issue is not the case here.

I have done enough backups in the past four years using the Acronis True Image 2016 software. It has always worked fine, and actually with less free space (I had another item on the drive too, but have deleted it. I also have deleterd about 32 GB of stuff from my C drive in an attempt to make this backup fit, but to no avail -- that is, my last two backups were actually larger than this one, and they fit fine.)

So, why do I keep getting the message about not enough space? I should have way more than enough.

    Uh oh. Unexpected issue at the end of copying over the files. It failed, saying:

    Access denied

    Unable to create directory - E:\GatewayWin8\System Volume Information

    48 File(s) copied

    Readout is below, and let me explain the top part:

    I started and got as far as this copying of the files over. But after putting in the code to do the copy, it listed the things and then just stopped. but no place to put in the next command. So it threw me a curve. I forgot it was 15 GB to copy, that is going to take a while,and at USB 2 speed. So, after nothing happened for maybe 10 minutes, I just closed the window and started again, after the part of putting the letter on the partition, that was already there. It went fine, and this time asked if I wanted to overwrite the files it already had copied, and I said yes to each. So with that, the previous stop to it was no issue in proceeding.

    It then looked hung up again, but I now realized it was copying and it was going to take some time to do 15 GB. It took a half hour, maybe more. But at the end, it said Access Denied. Unable to create directory.

    So,  I have to stop here. There are 12.7 GB of files in a disk showing in This PC named Push Button Reset X. I don't know if that is all or only just about all. Seems to me there is a little over 13 GB on the partition.

    (1) You may name it "Push Button Reset", fine, & take the letter off before a reboot. Also, yes, just reformat the USB flash drive afterward instead of RD.

    (2) You are doing well, as usual. Keep going. I should have said a word about System Volume Information, sorry. It belongs on drives/partitions -- not in folders...

    It's a system folder that holds restore points. Not only are we not using restore points on Partition 6, but the new Partition 6 will automatically generate its own System Volume Information folder, if/when necessary. Therefore, let us ignore that error.

    Here is the main thing. Thanks for showing the readout that said: "48 File(s) copied". It compares perfectly with your listing of files on Partition 6 (on page 16 -- remember, you listed it twice)...

    I'm surprised to hear that. So, you understand what happened. I thought it maihg t have gotten all the files (glad you remembered the earlier posting) but did not get some other maybe structural stuff that would be an issue.

    Good thing I did not shut down, just held it open.

    Going back in.

    Am now copying over the file. I lists 16 files, Ithiink the same and when I copied to the external drive. I am presuming this 48 number is some sort of subfiles?

    Anyway, its copy them over now. I have to expect a good half hour, like earlier.

    Yes, the partition is labeled as being Recovery.

    So, the end is near. After this, and whatever the next code it, I will take the X off the partition -- like I said earlier, I think better to take that off, and reboot, as another possible thing that might have been involved with the prior issue. It can alwasy be pt back on later.

    Everything will be in place, and presumably no bad sectors, which was the main point. I hope it is invisible (I think some sort of code line could make it so, but since you haven't suggested that, I don't think you know of one.)  Not too important if it is not linked to part 5 Recovery folder, you're finally convincing me that linked or not, it can't be used anyway. You wer esayiong spmetihg abotu Gateway stuff once in the Recovery folder and probably is needed to interact with the Gateway stuff on 6. I've also have to have it in my mind all week, and more and more and thinking I don't really care about that stuff anyway, don't think.
