Trouble Making Image Backup with Acronia True Image 2016 -- apparent misread of space

I have been trying for days now to make a backup image of my internal Windows 10 hard drive, fully updated to current Windows 10 level May 2020. I have been using Acronis True Image 2016, as I always do. I have been backing up to an external, USB2 connected hard drive with 160 GB of free space on it (a 320 GB hard drive), the same drive I normally backup to. This is a Gateway laptop, NE56R from 2012, which shipped with Windows 8.

I have been trying to backup all partitions, including the C, and recovery partitions (including the Push Button one, which is about 15 GB) and whatever others are there. In total, they are about 109 GB. So I ought to have plenty enough free space.

I have checked all partitions to back up with True Image. It runs the whole backup, takes a good five hours. At the end, it throws up amessage saying ther eis not enough space for the image.

I have never had this problem before. The machine is booted from the True Image disk, so that should rule out some issue wiht my Widows 10 OS. I am doing a full disk backup, and I am even using Maximum Compression, which is what I always use, so I should need something lessthatn 109 GB of free space. and Ihave 160 GB of free space on the external drive.

I have a backup of Win 10 I made in April, shortly before the new OS level cam out on the drive -- I always keep two, just because. I deleted the older of the two on there, so now have only the one. I certainly don't want to delete the one on there, and still have this problem but no backup at all. But Ihave more free space than shudbe needed.

The external drive has been used only for backups since I started using it brand new, and I make a backup once or twice a year -- and I have been using it no more than four years. So, the external drive has very little, hardly any actual use on it, it is not far from brand new.

I read something this morning about a real problem found in the new Win 10 update, something to do with Storage Space, that is some sort of function in the OS now. I don't know what that is, or what it does. But the story said if your drive is not showing as RAW, then it should be OK, not affected. I checked Disk Management, and none of my volumes nor the external drive are marked as RAW. So, that should mean that issue is not the case here.

I have done enough backups in the past four years using the Acronis True Image 2016 software. It has always worked fine, and actually with less free space (I had another item on the drive too, but have deleted it. I also have deleterd about 32 GB of stuff from my C drive in an attempt to make this backup fit, but to no avail -- that is, my last two backups were actually larger than this one, and they fit fine.)

So, why do I keep getting the message about not enough space? I should have way more than enough.

    I agree with all you said. What I'm doing now in imaging all five partitions is proving it rather thans simply believing it and later wondering. I will never have to wonder if and when this fails. As for getting the partitions from the Feb. image, I'm pretty sure I had bad sectors then too, and maybe in these same partitions. I don't know they are any better. But while I'm booted to Acronis, good idea would be to look into how or whether I even can take just two partitions off the image and put them on the comptuer.

    Yes abou tpossible issues from Partition Wizard. I thought about that before doing it, but could not know. But it is why I did not take any more free space off those partitions, I did not want it to mess with any actual data and files. The 800 MB one is less than half filled at that size. The 15 GB one -- I forget, but I could have taken I think at least two more GB, maybe more. It doesn't mean Partition Wizard did not mess it up. But its allI could do to try to avoid that. But I think the partitions had bad sectors already. But chkdsk found none on the 800 MB partition -- yet Acronis does.

    I might end up not backing up those two partitions. I might have no choice. Hmm,ormaubeIcoudlabck up just one, whicher might bethe more important one. But  since space is the issue, its probably the push blutton one not to backup.

    Hi,

    In reality, you could just delete both of those partitions... The next new build will create a new one at the end of the drive... But you have plenty of space, so it is no big deal which you decide to do..

    Acronis will in fact restore individual partitions.. You may need to choose a "New" location for them if the receiving drive is not exactly like the original... Since you will be restoring them to unallocated space most likely, you will need to do that..

    I was thinking that you had an image older than February... One several years old... If so, you could even use the partitions from there..

    SURPRISE! The backup just finished, in about 2 hours and 45 minutes. It is on the external drive now, at about 126 GB (the C: partition alone is 152 GB on the internal drive, and I set Acronis for Maximum Compression).

    It the backing up worked fine. Maybe Acronis is right about the bad dsectors ont hose two partionsand maybenot -- and I'm pretty sure I had bad secotrs when I tired tobackup my old hard drive, and it got worse after that, had to repalce it fast before it stopped working at all.

    So, that issue is now donw and over. Not sure abotu anytg else here. I think if anything, we now are talking only of possibly improving the backup partition by trading out the win 8 image there for a win 10 one. However, PCY Just PCR was indicating he had not done that before, woudlhave to look into details. I'm not sure we ought to jinx this now with a first-time test of doing that, rather than first having experience with it and knowing how to doit  and get it right.

    As for moving partitions, like I said, if the OS wants thim like that, I hesitate to move them. And if it works, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

    Oh, I want to post the readout from the chkdsk I ran this morning on Parittoin 5. Coming up. It said no bad sectors, but Acronis says it has bad sectors. I posted the Crystalxxxx thing earlier, btu I dont know how to read it. That would proabaly be the best to determine any bad sectors. 

    You guys have been wonderful help, and I learned a lot about dealing with partitions on Windows.

    Yes, if both you guys confirm that Partition 5 will be replaced, I should delete it next time before upgrading. I don't think you mean Part 6 will, that's the push button stuff, which I think you are right about, it includes additional Gateway stuff on it that I don't think would be recreated, it would be lost. I use some of that Gateway stuff, such as their more convenient power button.

    There is one consideration I mentioned earlier about deleting partition 5. If it has bad sectors, better to keep them where they are, not let them get into a different partition. I'm afraid if I delete Partition 5, they might show up in C.

    No, no older images. I have to delete the older one when I am going to do a newer one, or there will not be enough space.
