Trouble Making Image Backup with Acronia True Image 2016 -- apparent misread of space

I have been trying for days now to make a backup image of my internal Windows 10 hard drive, fully updated to current Windows 10 level May 2020. I have been using Acronis True Image 2016, as I always do. I have been backing up to an external, USB2 connected hard drive with 160 GB of free space on it (a 320 GB hard drive), the same drive I normally backup to. This is a Gateway laptop, NE56R from 2012, which shipped with Windows 8.

I have been trying to backup all partitions, including the C, and recovery partitions (including the Push Button one, which is about 15 GB) and whatever others are there. In total, they are about 109 GB. So I ought to have plenty enough free space.

I have checked all partitions to back up with True Image. It runs the whole backup, takes a good five hours. At the end, it throws up amessage saying ther eis not enough space for the image.

I have never had this problem before. The machine is booted from the True Image disk, so that should rule out some issue wiht my Widows 10 OS. I am doing a full disk backup, and I am even using Maximum Compression, which is what I always use, so I should need something lessthatn 109 GB of free space. and Ihave 160 GB of free space on the external drive.

I have a backup of Win 10 I made in April, shortly before the new OS level cam out on the drive -- I always keep two, just because. I deleted the older of the two on there, so now have only the one. I certainly don't want to delete the one on there, and still have this problem but no backup at all. But Ihave more free space than shudbe needed.

The external drive has been used only for backups since I started using it brand new, and I make a backup once or twice a year -- and I have been using it no more than four years. So, the external drive has very little, hardly any actual use on it, it is not far from brand new.

I read something this morning about a real problem found in the new Win 10 update, something to do with Storage Space, that is some sort of function in the OS now. I don't know what that is, or what it does. But the story said if your drive is not showing as RAW, then it should be OK, not affected. I checked Disk Management, and none of my volumes nor the external drive are marked as RAW. So, that should mean that issue is not the case here.

I have done enough backups in the past four years using the Acronis True Image 2016 software. It has always worked fine, and actually with less free space (I had another item on the drive too, but have deleted it. I also have deleterd about 32 GB of stuff from my C drive in an attempt to make this backup fit, but to no avail -- that is, my last two backups were actually larger than this one, and they fit fine.)

So, why do I keep getting the message about not enough space? I should have way more than enough.

Three disks in -- wow, you must have to suffer a lot of headaches! :)

Next up for me is to run the updater to latest Win 10 this afternoon. then run updates, and I will be done.

Yes, I figure that out when I rebooted to Partition Wizard. It is running and applying the moves now, five steps, step 2 is taking sometime. Don't know hwy, its just empty space being moved. But so be it.

Yes, fires, Covid-19, everything closing up again. LA city about to go into red about the virus, I think that will mean full lockdown again. Never a dull moment.

EDIT: OK, Partitoin Wizard finished as I was writing. I have now rebooted. Success, the Unallocated partition is gone, the space has been moved over, but the two small partitions stole some of it, as I said.

C partition is now 648.15 GB

Recovery partition is now 17.91 GB -- it was 802 MB, so it stole over 17 GB!

Push Button partition is now 31.77 -- it was 15.76 GB, so took an extrea 16.01 GB

So I should have had 33 GB more space on the C partition. Don't know why it would not let me move the rest. I wonder if I did it one more time, I could get some of that back. But I don't really need it, if Partition Wizard thinks those partitions need it, maybe I should just let them have it. Other than that, all is clean now.

So, next I will take it back up to the latest Win 10, then run updates.

I remember dealing with that Apply button before, and the lst of thigns pending. Only time I would have was when we last talked, that must be how we solved the issue back then. I even remember you saying to delete partitions, I don't need them. What goes around, comes around. Some things never change. :) At least this time, after you spending so much time and effort with me last time when I was very green with Windows, it is going a lot smoother -- although it still should not be all these issues. I learned a lot from you back then, and have been appreciative these years for that since, it has come in handy several times.

I installed three harddisks in laptop are all connected internally .

All three disks are visible by installing windows.because all harddisks formatted as GPT type.

Hi,

After you make your selections in Partition Wizard, you need to hit another button to actually cause them to Execute.. Apply Changes or something like that..

Hi,

What you need to attempt to do is to move the Push Button Recovery to the end of the drive, or delete it..

That was probably for the original OS and may or may not even be usable.. Either way will resolve your expansion issue..

You can delete the 800mb Recovery... Windows 10 will most probably create a new one in the same location by shrinking your C:\ partition 500mb or so when you do the upgrade.. At least that is what my Legacy machine does..

For me it is actually aggravating as I do not want the Recovery partition at all anyway..

Once these are moved or deleted you should have no problem expanding the C:... Either with Disk Management or Partition Wizard... It would probably be best to use Disk management whenever possible and resort to something else when there are no other options..

BTW.. There is a remote possibility that there is a very small 16mb-128mb hidden partition somewhere after C:.. Partition Wizard should show you where it is.. It will not appear in Disk Management.. You should probably check for it's location first..

Yes.. The last time we had contact there were fires in your area, and if I remember correctly you were getting the smoke and ash... This time the Coronavirus.. Isn't life great sometimes..
