Trouble Making Image Backup with Acronia True Image 2016 -- apparent misread of space

I have been trying for days now to make a backup image of my internal Windows 10 hard drive, fully updated to current Windows 10 level May 2020. I have been using Acronis True Image 2016, as I always do. I have been backing up to an external, USB2 connected hard drive with 160 GB of free space on it (a 320 GB hard drive), the same drive I normally backup to. This is a Gateway laptop, NE56R from 2012, which shipped with Windows 8.

I have been trying to backup all partitions, including the C, and recovery partitions (including the Push Button one, which is about 15 GB) and whatever others are there. In total, they are about 109 GB. So I ought to have plenty enough free space.

I have checked all partitions to back up with True Image. It runs the whole backup, takes a good five hours. At the end, it throws up amessage saying ther eis not enough space for the image.

I have never had this problem before. The machine is booted from the True Image disk, so that should rule out some issue wiht my Widows 10 OS. I am doing a full disk backup, and I am even using Maximum Compression, which is what I always use, so I should need something lessthatn 109 GB of free space. and Ihave 160 GB of free space on the external drive.

I have a backup of Win 10 I made in April, shortly before the new OS level cam out on the drive -- I always keep two, just because. I deleted the older of the two on there, so now have only the one. I certainly don't want to delete the one on there, and still have this problem but no backup at all. But Ihave more free space than shudbe needed.

The external drive has been used only for backups since I started using it brand new, and I make a backup once or twice a year -- and I have been using it no more than four years. So, the external drive has very little, hardly any actual use on it, it is not far from brand new.

I read something this morning about a real problem found in the new Win 10 update, something to do with Storage Space, that is some sort of function in the OS now. I don't know what that is, or what it does. But the story said if your drive is not showing as RAW, then it should be OK, not affected. I checked Disk Management, and none of my volumes nor the external drive are marked as RAW. So, that should mean that issue is not the case here.

I have done enough backups in the past four years using the Acronis True Image 2016 software. It has always worked fine, and actually with less free space (I had another item on the drive too, but have deleted it. I also have deleterd about 32 GB of stuff from my C drive in an attempt to make this backup fit, but to no avail -- that is, my last two backups were actually larger than this one, and they fit fine.)

So, why do I keep getting the message about not enough space? I should have way more than enough.

    Weird things happened after I did the ReagentC.

    It pointed to the new Recovery partition OK. But when I booted to it (Shift+Restart), it wasn't fully functioning. Not all the screens were there. In fact, hardly any were there beyond "Choose an Option". I rebooted to Windows OK, & a second try at Shift+Restart did have all the screens which seemed to work fine.

    I thought that meant I had missed a reboot somewhere. Maybe one was required after that partition work in DiskPart that deleted & recreated the partition even though its number remained 4. Maybe one (to Windows) was required after I did the ReagentC before doing Shift+Restart.

    So, I tried to do another ReagentC to point back to the original Recovery partition (partition 5 for me). I was going to do it, then immediately Shift+Restart. I thought that might determine which reboot was necessary that I had missed. But it didn't work: "REAGENTC.EXE: The specified path was not found.". The Recovery folder is there, but not much beyond it. It looks just like one that Windows leaves behind after an upgrade causes a new one to be created. (But your old ones don't look like that.) And my Xcopy didn't do that.

    So, it looks like Windows for some reason pulled the files out of my partition 5 & put them into partition 4 (my new Recovery partition) after I had already done it. It has a Recycle Bin in it containing the ones I had Xcopied to it...

    [Edit: Nah, clearly the Recycle Bin doesn't have recovery files inside. It's just a folder named after a GUID with a Desktop.ini inside. But I'm still thinking my set of Xcopied recovery files were possibly overwriten with a new set of them.]

    It didn't have that Recycle Bin until after I did the ReagentC & Shift+Restart. It works, but I guess you won't want your partition 6 to loose its Recovery files. Here is what my basically empty original Recovery partition looks like now...

    But I'll show you how to do the ReagentC, if you want. If you won't do it, there's no sense in deleting & recreating your partition 5 either.

    So here's the instructions that worked. This much will leave you in the same position as before, but partition 5 will be brand new & will have 2004 files. Hopefully, Acronis will not complain about partition 5 after this much...

    I did it. Looks like all went well. I'll write it up presently.

    I was attentive to that. It does come back as the same partition number. Mine was partition 4...

    My XCOPY command worked fine. It will copy the Recovery folder in your partition 6 to partition 5. And that is your 2004 recovery files that the upgrade put there.

    I will point my ReagentC to my new Recovery partition & see whether it will boot & work. I am confident it will. It has precisely the same files as are on the other.

    I'll put it all together shortly & post it.

    1. Hmm, I hope we can keep part 5 in part 5 position when we recreate it. When I don’t know, I don’t want anything changed.

    RE changed it to a Recovery part, I hope those two things are everything that is needed for it to work right. I’m sure you are right that the first line will cause it so be labeled Recovery, but I don’t know if anything else not so visible will make any difference.

    But from what you said, the thing that hits me most is guessing that the format to put on it is NTFS. I don’t know, but that’s the point. Everything might look fine, but will it work fine? We do need to have the correct format, I don’t know is they use something bizarre as a format on a Recovery partition.

    1. OK on the compression. I don’t think I checked final size when I imaged three of the partitions with Windows imaging. However, it did put all three in a single backup file. (It would not image the other two partition, maybe because of bad sectors. That was with the old, failing hard drive.)

    DiskWizard sounds good. Acronis seems to have the big name out there (I’m actually longtime friends with their former marketing guy, I guess he was the original one.)

    So, you’re saying my part 5 will be Windows RE Location. MY Recovery image location, the OS with the Gateway stuff in it, will remains as Part 6? I can’t read that code at all. I see the partition 5 in there, but you said it was part 4 that you got it as, so how did that code pick up on it if it was not part 5?

    Sorry, have to query all this — I don’t want to wish after the fact that I had, and have to say, “I never thought …” This is the time to think.

    (1) I'm at it now. Already I created a new 826 MB (your size) partition using Disk Management. Even though it was between partitions 3 & 4, DiskPart then called it partition 5. But after a reboot it now is partition 4...

    Now I will do those DiskPart commands that delete & recreate it. It will become a Recovery partition when I get to these two...

    But it's really the first of those that does it. Well, it also has to be formatted as NTFS, I guess. But that ID is the most important thing.

    (2) "only Acronis can compress, Windows OS imaging has no settings for that"

    I appear to get 50% compression with DiscWizard at the default setting. Windows system image backup has no setting for it but does also compress but not quite as much last I looked. Where DiscWizard puts all the partitions into a single .tib, Windows puts them into separate .vhdx files. Here is my last one for Windows 1909...

    The biggest .vhdx is the C: partition. That doesn't look like much compression at all, really, as I'm usually around 40 GB in used space. But I don't know the precise circumstance of that image.

    (3) "Teh redirecting better work, though"

    It works, I've done it myself a few times. But, right, partition 6 remains the guy otherwise. It seems to auto-adjust too. Right after adding adding that partition, the following still said Partition 4 (which indeed it still was). After my reboot, it says Partition 5 (which indeed it now is)...
