Multiple ESENT Warnings Event ID 642 post 2004 Upgrade

I agree it isn't bad hardware, if it's only 2004 doesn't like it.

It's pretty quick to try the clean boot. I would try that first because it prevents processes & services from starting automatically in the background (whether you run the app or not).

My 1st try at 2004 through Windows Update became very unstable very quickly. My 2nd try through an upgrade-install from a USB Installation drive was stable, but eventually Search would not work when clicked on the Taskbar or in a File Explorer box. No fix would fix it, not the troubleshooter or a reset from an app downloaded from MSFT.

I did a repair-install yesterday/so, & all looks great. I think it's worth a try for you too. It could just be 2004 has installed badly the first time. I'm unsure it makes a difference, but, if you make the USB drive today, it starts off as OS Build 388. By the end of the repair process, you will be 450.

I have tried a clean installation on another drive connected to the machine and it even does it with that. I think their is something in this version on this machine as I have 2 other I7 PC's with different I7 chips and boards that don't have this problem when running this version of windows 10. I have even tried this installation on one of the other pc's and it runs fine, i think its just something in one of the DLL's that is throwing a wobbly on this pc. Hopefully the next version will solve the problem for me.

(1) Forget the ESENT errors. It doesn't cause all that & probably causes nothing at all. I've got them too.

(2) Try a clean boot to see whether File Explorer & all else improves. If so, it likely is a 3rd-party app causing the problems. If you can't guess which one, there is a procedure to follow to track it down...

(3) If a clean boot fails to improve it, then likely it is Windows itself the culprit. And things sound bad enough to me to go straight to the big guns. Just before a clean install, try a repair-install. I just did one for something else, & it worked beautifully. It keeps files, apps & settings.

(a) Turn off Controlled Folder Access at "Defender, Virus & Threat Protection, Manage Settings, Manage Controlled Folder Access", if you ever had turned it on. Otherwise, it will interfere near the end of the upgrade/repair-install.

(b) Make a Win 10 Installation USB drive here...

Download Windows 10 -- currently, this is version 2004

You download the MediaCreationTool2004.exe, plug in an 8 GB USB drive, & double-click the tool to run. It could take up to 2 hours, but will create bootable media that could be used to clean install Windows, if the repair-install is ineffective. But for the repair-install, just open the Installation USB drive in File Explorer, & click Setup.exe. That could take another 2.5 hours to complete.

I'm at the point where my computer is barely usable for day to day use.  If Microsoft doesn't release a fix soon, I'll have to install an older version of Windows 10 and not update it for a while.  I cannot use the file explorer.  Its that bad.  I have no way to browse drives and directories because of how slow it is and the the frequent random crashes.

I forgot to mention, if i don't wait several minutes before opening a file(document, picture, whatever it doesn't matter) after opening a directory, windows explorer freezes and needs to be restarted.  How can anyone be expected to use a computer like this?

it wont matter, this happens on fresh installs + these updates which you then cant even uninstall.

microsoft already said this is a bug and they are working on a patch and im fairly convinced its linked to certain microsoft store apps or just the way it paths and indexes stuff to do with apps.

if use programs installed on my second drive, like steam or some other game program, no problem.

if i open netflix or prime for example, which are installed on the OS drive from the microsoft store, i get those esent messages.

but i dont get them when i use Edge browser or mail (outlook).

So its some kind of indexing problem most likely.

though to be fair i have not noticed any problems due to this.. yet.

I have the same issue.  After the August 11, 2020—KB4566782 update a few days ago I get a ton of ESENT warnings eventid 642.

In addition to that I can't view thumbnails of my photos most of my folders and windows file explorer is really slow to display anything.  Also the file explorer randomly freezes for no reason at all and needs to be restarted.

I tried the fix in the first post here.  I tried using a different default program for photos.  I don't have a windows.old folder to delete.  I've tried all the usual fixes I linked below and more.  None of them worked.  I've been working on this for several days now with no improvement.

This update really messed things up on my system.  At this point my only option may be doing a complete reinstall and installing everything from scratch then hoping the same issue doesn't come back.  I had to do a complete reinstall of Windows 10 when a previous update made another computer I had completely unusable and Microsoft didn't have a fix.  

Everything worked flawlessly before that update and now I'm left with a system that is barely usable.
