Win10 2004 suddenly removed access to multiple external hard drives. In desperate need of help [ cannot find a solution :( ]

Hey everyone,

Name is Antonio and I'm not a regular here. But going to give this a shot and hope that the great minds here can help me get access to my 5 External Hard Drives. The brief story:

Updated to Win10 2004 a couple of weeks ago and everything was fine until a few days ago when Windows does what it normally does, break down in random areas and causes aggravation and headaches. I won't bore anyone with the large list of issues that kept growing daily, except the one that suddenly removed my access to multiple external HDD's. These hard drives house a host of my backup files (photos/videos/programs/music and more) and my video editing files for my job as well. All of a sudden my 12TB G-Speed Studio and 2 WD drives disappeared. A few hours later my 2 WD drives reappeared with the message telling me I don't have permission to access the drives. I did some reading and research and thought the permissions was the issue, however it is not and I had zero success with so many methods i've found on this site and around the web. Maybe it is, but everything i've tried regarding permissions is not working.

I went ahead and downloaded version 1909 from someplace and loaded 1909 yesterday and spent 10 hours working on getting my computer back to "normal" Still not done but whatever. Still didn't have access to the drives. Went ahead and did everything I already tried a second time with no success.

I brought the drives over to my Win7 Laptop and couldn't fix the issue there either.

I just tried doing random things that no one would normally do to their functioning hard drive just to see if I could accidentally fix the issue, but to no avail, nothing worked. I ended up formatting one of my WD drives as it only had specific files I already had backed up to another drive very recently. This wasn't a loss but my other drive is going to be if I cannot gain access. Same goes for my 12TB G-Speed

I'm at a major loss right now. While I'm still pissed at MS for this junk beta OS that I have no choice to use, I need to get passed this anger and solve this issue. I cannot do it alone and need anyone's help. I'm willing to try whatever I need to do without question or hesitation. I NEED this drive as I haven't gotten around to backing it up which was going to happen in another week when my new HDD arrives.

I greatly appreciate any and all help! :)

    Hi,

    Just click "Continue", "Ignore", or "OK" when you get those errors..

    There are certain files that are consider Windows System Files,and are blocked from permission change..

    On data drives, those are normally just the Recycle Bin and System Volume Information.. If the drive was hooked up during a Windows installation, they may have additional Boot and\or Recovery folders that will generate the errors..

    On a Windows drive or folder, you may need to hit that 50-100 times, but on a data drive there should only be a small number..

    It is possible that you my eventually gain access to the drive, but then need to do the Permission\Owner change for a few isolated files or folders..

    BTW... My experience with Recuva is that in order to recover the files, you may need to copy them to another drive.. I'm not sure if Recuva works that way, or it was another file recovery program I tried that does that..

    Hi,

    I have read of others having issues accessing some of their drives after an update\upgrade, but I have never encountered this issue.. However, I have several USB 3.0 drives that I routinely switch between different machines that on rare occasions are not recognized correctly.. This is most likely an entirely different issue than what you are encountering..

    About the Permission and OWNER.. I just wanted to clarify.. Are you changing both the Owner and User ?

    And that you are checking the box to "Replace on Sub Containers and Objects"..

    I don't mind redundancy at this point. I'll try everything and anything over again. I can confirm I changed both the Owner and User and I have checked the 'replace sub containers and objects' and even the 'replace old child object permissions'

    Among all of this I did forget to mention when trying to apply permissions, I would always get one error message while it was scanning that would say "failed to enumerate objects in the container access is denied" Any solution for this? I didn't check online for solutions. maybe this is a key to solving my issue?

    Please post a screenshot of Disk Management, which I read like a doctor reads X-rays. Follow the steps here so I can see everything needed to advise you: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/foru...

    Also be sure to block Version 2004 since it is causing more problems than it's worth and has nothing new to offer anyway. I would even wait for the next Version Update:

    It's cool. If you can't see the images at the top of the page ill post new ones. Currently running the recuva software. I have recuva on my win7 laptop but completely forgot about it since I never had to use it until today. It's got 15 more hours to go with the deep scan and 400,000+ files already found. Hoping the main files I need are recoverable. I did a quick short scan and things didn't look good.

    All updates are officially blocked from every entry point from MS. Currently using Sledgehammer.

    Quick access to turn on updates to check for store updates or to get a game/program/app running. Then a quick disable to save me from MS sneaking in an unwanted update. Keeping updates paused also helps that from happening, but sledgehammer is literally the greatest application against forced updates.
