Today I was notified by Windows Update that the 2004 update is finally ready to be downloaded and installed on my laptop. I pressed download and install and left the laptop plugged in idle as I did not have any laptop work to do at that time. Now it's been 4 hours since I left it on, and the Windows Update screen (in the Settings > Updates & Security) is still at 94% installing, which is the exact number I saw more than an hour ago. Is it stuck? Why is it taking so long to install? My internet is fast enough, I don't have many programs installed apart from a few essentials such as Office and Inkscape along with other credible software. I am afraid that if I close it and reset the Windows Update, it'll take 4+ hours again (not to mention the additional lengthy rebooting and installing the update again in the blue background screen which happens with every single update), plus it's already night here so I cannot leave it turned on while I go to sleep.

It was an update for May 2020 (Windows 10 version 2004). Actually, I stopped the process and it rolled back to its' previous version. I also checked if there is enough space before upgrading. Lastly, I used Windows 10 update assistant and everything went smoothly and easily in less than two hours.

So I got back from holiday, and realised this update was automatically running as soon as I switched on. Wow! I thought there was something wrong with the laptop. Every click on the mouse took ages to get a response. The installation was soooo slow, it brought the machine almost to a standstill. I did all the usual housekeeping things to clean it up, and then got fed up and a bit scared (I am not as computer literate as many of the subscribers are). So now I've paused the update until the end of Oct in the hope the 2004 update may have become more user friendly. Is that okay? Does it matter if I'm still running on 1903?

You are way behind in your updates. There is 1909 that you have missed. Running 1903 is gonna make the update process be more nauseating. A real pain in the butt! I would advise you to attempt the update from Windows Update again. It may still take you a while because you are dealing with getting updates to get you ready for updates. Sometimes, the updates are layered.
Try that and check back. Again, it may take a while....
You don't understand - Windows Update is lying to me.
Windows Update is claiming I am up to date after 30 minutes.
It is updating the Windows Virus version - but not updating anything else.
Imagine if a doctor was taking your xrays, but telling you everything is fine based on the old xray!
Useing Windows Update is useless!!!
I need to manually do something and never believe Windows Update status again. It's totally bogus!
