After spending what seems like a million hours attempting to get the last system (mine!) in my organization from 1909 to 2004, failing each and every time...trying all the tricks I know, tricks I learned along the way and anything/everything "on a hunch", I've decided to port my physical device to virtual (VMware) and will now attempt the update this way. The plan is to remove all of my 3rd party IT tools, one at a time, until successful (at this point, I suspect my failures/problems may be related to one or more of these...a stretch, yes). In the end, I have far too many requirements in my "day job" to take the plunge of a new/fresh install. I suppose I could do that over a weekend, but I spend too much time as it is at work. LOL
Windows 10 Feature Update 2004 taking too long to install
Today I was notified by Windows Update that the 2004 update is finally ready to be downloaded and installed on my laptop. I pressed download and install and left the laptop plugged in idle as I did not have any laptop work to do at that time. Now it's been 4 hours since I left it on, and the Windows Update screen (in the Settings > Updates & Security) is still at 94% installing, which is the exact number I saw more than an hour ago. Is it stuck? Why is it taking so long to install? My internet is fast enough, I don't have many programs installed apart from a few essentials such as Office and Inkscape along with other credible software. I am afraid that if I close it and reset the Windows Update, it'll take 4+ hours again (not to mention the additional lengthy rebooting and installing the update again in the blue background screen which happens with every single update), plus it's already night here so I cannot leave it turned on while I go to sleep.

2020-09-10T00:33:47+00:00 Thanks for the big team for every update! I have lasted version Win 10.0.19041.450 . I have a ThinkPad Pro CPU 7e generation with more than 32Go RAM. Since few weeks, when I boot my laptop and I signin with standard account, the process Windows Update took around 15-20% of my CPU for 1 or 2 minutes. The fans are always quiet except if the CPU work more. Microsoft have new method to check how update the OS !? If I can find the good method (clue) to say to the service Win Update please keep quiet! I found an easy solution, I disabled the service Windows Update !!
