Today I was notified by Windows Update that the 2004 update is finally ready to be downloaded and installed on my laptop. I pressed download and install and left the laptop plugged in idle as I did not have any laptop work to do at that time. Now it's been 4 hours since I left it on, and the Windows Update screen (in the Settings > Updates & Security) is still at 94% installing, which is the exact number I saw more than an hour ago. Is it stuck? Why is it taking so long to install? My internet is fast enough, I don't have many programs installed apart from a few essentials such as Office and Inkscape along with other credible software. I am afraid that if I close it and reset the Windows Update, it'll take 4+ hours again (not to mention the additional lengthy rebooting and installing the update again in the blue background screen which happens with every single update), plus it's already night here so I cannot leave it turned on while I go to sleep.

On a daily basis, I check for updates on my desktop pc. If I encounter problems that can't be resolved, I ask for help from Microsoft. Since this corona virus epidemic hit, I suspect that the internet has become a hive of activity whose users compete for time, downloads and installations.

I am a desktop pc user who tries to resolve download/installation issues on my own and when all else fails, I consult Microsoft.
The 2004 windows update was a success after several days of time intervals.
Since this corona virus epidemic hit, I am sure that the internet has much congestion due to the amount of increased attention in obedience to social distancing. Don't give up...when the going gets tough, the tough get going! Are you tough or what? Stay healthy!

Hi Susan, I appreciate the encouragement, however this "problem" goes far deeper than Internet congestion, COVID, etc. Having long been a supporter of Microsoft (I am an IT Infrastructure Support Engineer by career choice), Windows has become less of an operating system and more of an over-bloated sales and marketing engine (Candy Crush anyone?). Sadly, those who suffer are its users and, at the same time, Microsoft continues to push and pump garbage updates, patches and the like. Microsoft's "service" that boasts automagically updating any/all Windows 10 device, whether the user wants it or not, can/should be a seamless process, but clearly it's not ready for primetime. This posting says it all. For clarity, I've attempted this 1909 to 2004 update both online and offline, using the Windows 10 Update Troubleshooter, Update Assistant and a downloaded ISO from the Microsoft "business" Licensing Portal and still, the result is the same - a never-ending (multi-hour) "pause" of sorts at 59%. Nobody deserves such delays (seriously, 9 hours? Upgrading from Windows 95 to 98, with all them floppy disks, didn't take anywhere close to that) and, to boot, no explanation or error detail in which to further troubleshoot what's going on (wrong) with the update. Shame on Microsoft.
Well, now, look at that...while putting together this thoughtful response, I was (once again) attempting to complete the 1909 to 2004 update on the troubled computer and, after 5-10 minutes of hanging at 59%, I now get a Windows dialog box indicating, "The Windows 10 Installation has failed"...and nothing but an OK button. Progress!

UPDATE: Yay, I went ahead and hit the Subscribe button on the original post. A drop down came up with the choice of Unsubscribing. I click Unsubscribe. What a weird way to do things. But anyway, keeping fingers crossed this does the trick.

Do you know why I am getting emails about this post? Yes, I had posted a question and got some very helpful replies. Unfortunately I was not able to load the update and it went away on its own. I am not interested in wasting anymore time on this update as the place I purchased my laptop from about 2 years ago told me it was an optional update. It had popped on my list of updates for 4 tries over maybe 2 weeks whenever I used laptop and thought of trying again. Anyway, I looked for the 3 dots by the question Microsoft says should be the area to unsubscribe. I am not seeing the 3 dots but I do see a subscribe button by the post and I am not subscribed. I am thinking maybe my question automatically signs me up for emails moving forward? I am really over Microsoft and this update and at age 62 have a real life outside of online to live/lol. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Annoying getting emails from a post I am not subscribed to.
