Today I was notified by Windows Update that the 2004 update is finally ready to be downloaded and installed on my laptop. I pressed download and install and left the laptop plugged in idle as I did not have any laptop work to do at that time. Now it's been 4 hours since I left it on, and the Windows Update screen (in the Settings > Updates & Security) is still at 94% installing, which is the exact number I saw more than an hour ago. Is it stuck? Why is it taking so long to install? My internet is fast enough, I don't have many programs installed apart from a few essentials such as Office and Inkscape along with other credible software. I am afraid that if I close it and reset the Windows Update, it'll take 4+ hours again (not to mention the additional lengthy rebooting and installing the update again in the blue background screen which happens with every single update), plus it's already night here so I cannot leave it turned on while I go to sleep.

Hi, I was generally checking the windows update and there was feature update 10, version 2004. It's taking a long time to install. I have paused the update for now. Is it good ti install it now or should i wait and install. I read somewhere that there might be bugs if we download it as soon as it is released. Please help me.
22-27 hours for a Windows 10 upgrade is insane! Patience is one thing, but that would require the patience of a Saint with a lot of free time!
Question(s); What kind of PC do you have (make/model, processor, RAM, hard drive size & type)? I ask because based on the amount of time it took, I'm guessing it's an older system with limited RAM and/or slow CPU cores, and most likely a mechanical hard drive. A slow Internet connection would also drastically affect the time it took to download the upgrade software.
I have an 8-core Zeon processor, 64GB RAM, a 1-TB SSD (Solid State Drive) and a broadband Internet connection have gets about 220 Mbps. Still, even with server-grade hardware, my upgrade attempts, albeit failed attempts, were taking about 3-4 hours. The fresh install took less than 1 hour. I'm an IT Systems Administrator, so I've done some tedious long installs & upgrades on very old hardware - but even installing Novell Netware on old 80368 hardware, swapping dozens of 3.5" disk never took over 1 day!
Anyways, I'm glad to hear your upgrade finally "took". I'm glad I finally gave up and did a fresh install on my PC because there must have been registry issues or some rogue driver that was causing mine to consistently fail no matter what steps I took to prevent it from failing.
My 2004 is up and running...patience is a virtue.
I have patience... I just got into my laptop again. Watched it happen so I have the exact clock. From the point I clicked "Reboot Now" in the Windows Update Config screen to the point I was able to actually login to Windows was 14 hours and 10 minutes. Bringing the grand total time to run the update 22-27 hours of uninterrupted activity.

I wasn't so lucky. Gave up on the upgrade and did a fresh install from the release 2004 media I downloaded. Hopefully, whatever was "broken" and causing the upgrade to fail won't be an issue on the next Feature Release upgrade. I spent 5 days and many hours trying everything - uninstalled all hardware, disabled Radeon video drivers, storage drivers, removed my sound card, changed BIOS settings, etc. Kept getting that stupid thread exception BSOD (after hours of waiting). No .DMP files to examine because it crashed such that it couldn't write to the disk. The fresh install worked - so my hardware is compatible. Makes me love the Linux machines I work on even more.
