Today I was notified by Windows Update that the 2004 update is finally ready to be downloaded and installed on my laptop. I pressed download and install and left the laptop plugged in idle as I did not have any laptop work to do at that time. Now it's been 4 hours since I left it on, and the Windows Update screen (in the Settings > Updates & Security) is still at 94% installing, which is the exact number I saw more than an hour ago. Is it stuck? Why is it taking so long to install? My internet is fast enough, I don't have many programs installed apart from a few essentials such as Office and Inkscape along with other credible software. I am afraid that if I close it and reset the Windows Update, it'll take 4+ hours again (not to mention the additional lengthy rebooting and installing the update again in the blue background screen which happens with every single update), plus it's already night here so I cannot leave it turned on while I go to sleep.

Awesome - a highly unorthodox effort, but positive outcome, so congrats.
Unfortunately, I cannot apply that same level of effort for my work computer...if this fails, it'll only further irritate me (having wasted all that additional time/effort for nothing) and if it crashes/destroys my system, well, then I'll be re-building my work computer or looking to change careers. LOL

I succeeded!
When I got up this morning, 8 hours later, it was done. It did show me a few settings for privacy, location, ads and data tracking...I think that was for Edge, although it did also include finding my device if it's stolen.

The update never completes....sadly and aggravatingly. It either "stalls" for days on end and some lame % or I get a generic "failed" error...within minutes of aborting the process, hey, looky there, I have an update to apply. Wash, rinse and repeat...with or without a repair and reboot. Nothing changes. Well, the good news is an "expert" chimed in to state my device isn't compatible.
Microsoft has totally screwed up their "software as a service" delivery scheme/model. They're doing the same with the Microsoft 365 offering (formerly known as Office, Office 365, etc.).
Their (lack of) interest in correcting said missteps is far beyond comical. I guess to reach out is to acknowledge, "We are pushing a crappy product to you".
What expert said it's not compatible? Not in this thread...
While Dell, HP, Lenovo and others benefit as a result of your suggestion, it's not a healthy relationship -- Microsoft has the upper hand in this relationship...always has...the OEMs can either "play ball" or sell devices with Chrome OS or some flavor of Linux, etc. Yeah, surely that won't pay the bills.
