Today I was notified by Windows Update that the 2004 update is finally ready to be downloaded and installed on my laptop. I pressed download and install and left the laptop plugged in idle as I did not have any laptop work to do at that time. Now it's been 4 hours since I left it on, and the Windows Update screen (in the Settings > Updates & Security) is still at 94% installing, which is the exact number I saw more than an hour ago. Is it stuck? Why is it taking so long to install? My internet is fast enough, I don't have many programs installed apart from a few essentials such as Office and Inkscape along with other credible software. I am afraid that if I close it and reset the Windows Update, it'll take 4+ hours again (not to mention the additional lengthy rebooting and installing the update again in the blue background screen which happens with every single update), plus it's already night here so I cannot leave it turned on while I go to sleep.

On a daily basis, I check for updates on my desktop pc. If I encounter problems that can't be resolved, I ask for help from Microsoft. Since this corona virus epidemic hit, I suspect that the internet has become a hive of activity whose users compete for time, downloads and installations.

So, I am not tech savvy. I am having issues opening my apps and was directed to check for updates. I am not sure why this did not automatically update if it was released some time ago. But, it was 8 am when I clicked to start the update. It is now 12:53 pm and it is only at 3%. There was some sort of update that occurred when I logged off last night. Ever since, I have been having issues where all my accounts have been signed out of and I can't open apps. Why are these updates always causing problems for us users? This is a time-consuming headache. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah... mine sat on 82% for like 9 hours.
In-general unless your PC goes *completely frozen (like you can't even move you mouse on the screen) Windows Update doesn't really "freeze" it just hangs on to certain percentages while it does "something" behind the scenes (what we don't know and it probably shouldn't be doing).
SO: like you said "let it do it's thing". If you think it's frozen it probably isn't.
I found this post after countless attempts (over 10) to complete an update from 1909 to 2004. After letting my work computer sit for over 4.5 hours this time and seemingly get to and be stuck at 59%, I decided to conduct some additional research. On one hand, I'm happy to see I'm not the only one suffering. On the other hand, I'm astonished...your experience was 9 hours? I would imagine many others have experienced varying times (longer or shorter), but I can't fathom having to wait 9 +/- hours for my computer to be "updated" to the latest feature(s). I am running out of patience/defense of my lifelong support of this platform -- Microsoft needs to get back to the fundamentals and put an end to this "as a service" trainwreck they've come up with. Your 9-hour experience beats Microsoft's infamous Server 2016 update fiasco by like 6 hours. The majority of those who could do so, well, they upgraded to Server 2019 (the only well-documented solution, if one could even call it that). Those of us who are less fortunate, we suffer just about every month when it comes time to apply the monthly cumulative updates. Shame on Microsoft.
