May I suggest you try the following:

FIRST:  Go to Adminstrative Tools>Disk Cleanup>Cleanup System Files (if a big update is stuck it will take awhile to think)>make sure the Windows Update Cleanup, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files boxes are checked>Now Run the Cleanup

NEXT:  Go to Administrative Tools>Services>Windows Installer>Start then Stop the service

           Now down a little further on the list find Windows Update>Start then Stop the service

REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER GO TO WINDOWS UPDATE AND TRY AGAIN

Although I don't have your problem I think this may fix it.  Hope it works!

I have had the same issue - online "independent" Adviser "Rod" suggested sing Disk Clean Up  - still didn't work. I'm buying an IMAC next time

What happens to me, and this has happened twice; is that Windows seems to command my computer to shut off during the update process. This in turn causes Windows to UNDO THE CHANGES TO THE COMPUTER upon powering back up.

Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004 failed to install all the way.  I have tried twice to get this update and both times it did not complete all the way / only 86% then failed.  When I check for updates again I get:

the next version of Windows is available with new features and security improvements.  When you're ready for update, select "Download and install"

The issue is simply this: There is not enough room on the C drive.

The update needs space to download, then space to unpack so that it can install. If the download is say, 10Gig, then the unpacked size is probably 15-20Gig (just using numbers, not the actual size necessarily), so the needed space is 25-30Gb.

This is why MS introduced some application with install as it downloads option, to reduce this huge overhead.

The suggestion to use DiskCleanup is simply to get rid of old temp files and installers for already installed apps, to free up more space.

Check your C drive and make sure you have plenty of space on it.

As I rule of thumb I have Windows and Windows essentials on my C drive, only, and all my apps are on separate a drive.
