How to install KB5034441: Windows Recovery Environment update for Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2: January 9, 2024

I tried to manually resize the partition by 250 MB per the instructions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5028997-instructions-to-manually-resize-your-partition-to-install-the-winre-update-400faa27-9343-461c-ada9-24c8229763bf#articleFooterSupportBridge=communityBridge

I had to exit Disk Part because I can not shrink the OS partition first:

    These instructions are BOGUS!

    Even the command window list capture SHOWS you trying to shrink PARTITION 1, instead of 3!!!

    You can't shrink partition 1.

    Other Instructors include a step similar to this that includes a delete the recovery step,

    which is a MAJOR NO-NO!

    Once the recovery and the recovery image partitions are gone, THEY ARE GONE!

    And if you opt for a factory reset, you will lose all your updates and UPGRADES too.

    This KB5034441 problem is beginning to look more and more like an intentional virus or malware, intent on forcing people to have to repurchase another downloadable key.

    The "failure" of the update is triggered by insufficient "free" disk-space in the Recovery partition.

    Note that any laptop from 2011 (or 2019) probably has an out-of-warranty disk-drive, that could also be approaching being "full" of your files.

    For me, the remedy was to use free "disk-cloning" software to copy the disk-drive's partitions onto a brand-new, in-warranty, disk-drive. The software allows one to adjust the size of the partitions, e.g., slightly shrink (by 1 GB) the partition that precedes the Recovery partition, and slightly expand the Recovery partition (by 1GB), and then launch the "copy" process.

    You'll never miss 1 GB on the copy of the "preceding" partition, and adding 1GB to the copied Recovery partition will allow the update to be successful.

    And, keep the "old" disk-drive, and label it as a "snapshot" of your disk-drive, as it existed today (July 1 -- Canada Day). and put it into your fire-proof safe (or safety deposit box at your local bank). :-)

    Thanks so much for trying to help other users in the same boat as yourself. Most of the details provided to date in this forum, is above my pay grade. The issue impacts both my 2011 and 2019 laptops. Wastes a ton of my time every single day. I do not have the skillset to make the changes that Microsoft foisted on all users with KB503441. And Microsoft is not going to support me for free when I have to call them to help me fix whatever I may attempt on my own, to resolve their mess.

    It is extremely frustrating that Microsoft has the monopoly here, and continues to believe this is good service.

    I was just reading a bit through here since i have the same problem and i didn't know that it was related to the Windows Recovery Environment that this one update keeps failing...

    Two things:

    First of all, i'd try to create or modify the partitions on my SSD according to the values you guys posted in here and follow your advice, since it seems pretyy helpful, not gonna lie..

    Last but not least, i'd recommend everyone, if you have an USB-Drive with Windows on it (ESD-USB), just copy its entire Contents onto a specific, hidden Partition (on your SSD/HDD) and call that Partition "ESD-USB" since that way i was able to have a Recovery Env, even though Windows apparently fails to create it on its own ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    To do that, Just create a USB-Drive with the all-so-famous "Media Creation Tool"
    Open it up in Windows Explorer, Select all Files and press CTRL+C
    Create a new Partition on one of your secondary Drives (if you have multiple ones)
    the Partition should be formatted in this way: 8 GB Disk Size, Default Cluster-Size, FAT-32, QucikFormat is Optional

    basically like the real USB would be formatted too when created with the Tool
    then copy all of the USB's Contents onto that new Partition (using CTRL+V)
    and finally, remove the Drive Letter from the new Partition in Diskmgmt.msc so that you don't accidentally delete something or put something else in that doesn't belong there...

    Yes, i know i have weird ideas on how to solve problems, but at least i'm open enough to share these ideas with other people, even if these ideas coming from me are sometimes more than just stupid...

    Anthony Kane: if you read the previous messages on this thread, you will find an answer.

    If you are about to install Windows 10/11, you have the option to correctly create the "Recovery" partition that is the correct size, namely much less than 2GB in size, to prevent the issue from arising. Then, just deploy this image to all your computers.
