I googled the actual KB and found this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/kb5034441-windows-recovery-environment-update-for-windows-10-version-21h2-and-22h2-january-9-2024-62c04204-aaa5-4fee-a02a-2fdea17075a8. It seems that it updates the Windows Recovery (WinRE) environment, and the tip about resizing the partition for that is valid. You can find the link to the instructions in the KB article I linked.

I did that and the installation passed.

Yep, same problem here. Have tried DISM and SFC, rebooted, stood on one leg, let the cat out, fed the birds - no change.

And there is NO WAY I'm fannying about with the WinRE partition thingy.

Sort it out MS. The cynic inside me says this is the first of a line of drip-drip mysterious system update fails that tries to wear us down enough to go out and buy a Win11 machine. But that's just me being cynical 🤔

I won't do anything. I'll just wait some time for Microsoft to fix it

The latest update has wrecked havoc on my computer. I thought it was just another update, like many others over the years and it didn't even cross my mind this will lead to a total mess.

Immediately following the update all of my networking devices have become invisible. Nothing worked, there was no internet connection and all of LAN and Wifi adapters have disappeared. I tried running the networking troubleshooter, but it would not start.

It gave me "Diagnostic policy services is not running" error.

Since this was the first symptom, I went on my phone to search for possible solutions why my networking troubleshooter isn't working. What followed was a bunch of various loops and hoops, reinstalling all adapters and editing admin privileges of local services. Few reboots later, I finally had my internet back.

But, now my VPN service didn't want to start. So, naturally, being the next symptom I started Googling what the heck was going on with Nord VPN, followed by more hoops and loops, endless reboots and various other things, everything from editing registry to changing startup processes. Nothing worked.

Worried that this may be a more serious problem, I went to check my Windows Defender - to my shock it was disabled and could not be enabled, no matter what I tried. So I immediately went to do a system scan to check for any viruses - all clear. Then I did the whole system integrity tests, DISM, SFC, disk scans and a bunch of other stuff. I literally spent my whole day yesterday dealing with this BS.

Well, fine. I'll just revert to a saved restore point and wait this out. Well, all of my restore points are gone and my system restore is disabled and cannot be enabled.

Finally, by exploring this latest problem, I stumbled upon a post that said to check updates. And sure enough, I have a failed update that cannot be installed.

So, to recap... Currently I don't have Windows Defender, I can't use VPN, half of the services that should be running are stopped and cannot be started, my system restore doesn't work and cannot be enabled and every trick in the book that I've tried has failed. And I'm not a beginner, I do have experience with **** like this, but this... It's just insane what they've did.

    GREAT JOB WINDOWS!
