Update KB5034441 fails to install

So the other topic about this was lokced for who knows what reason, why lock a topic / problem that has not been resolved yet?

I keep getting notification every day about this update and as you know we cannot install it because of some problem. What I read in the other locked topic is that the update is something for bitlocker, I dont use bitlocker so do I need it? Also is there a way to set windows to ignore this update and stop reminding me about it ?

MS needs to fix this and not have people doing all kinds of risky steps in order to fix it. Most people wont know what to do when they see that the update can't be installed, many are not that good with technical windows stuff. So if anyone can tell me a way to tell windows to ignore this update thx.

EDIT: I just saw a video where they explained how to hide it using a tool from MS called WUShowHide, isnt there a way to hide it directly in windows without the need of downloading this tool?

Hi Salvida,

From Windows 10, version 22H2 | Microsoft Learn

Issue details January 2024

The January 2024 Windows RE update might fail to install

Status Originating update History

Resolved N/A

KB5034441

2024-01-09 Resolved: 2024-04-30, 14:07 PT

Opened: 2024-01-12, 14:10 PT

Devices attempting to install the January 2024 Windows Recovery Environment update (KB5034441) might display an error related to the size of the Recovery Environment's partition. The Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is used to repair or recover from issues affecting Windows.

Resulting from this error, the following message might be displayed.

"0x80070643 - ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE"

Important: If your Windows device does not have a recovery environment configured, you do not need this update (KB5034441). In this case, the error can be ignored.

To determine whether your device has a recovery environment configured, inspect the WinRE status by following these steps:

Open a Command Prompt window (cmd) as admin.

To check the WinRE status, run reagentc /info. If the WinRE is configured, a "Windows RE status" field will appear in the output, with value "Enabled". If WinRE is not configured, this field will have the value "Disabled".

Resolution: Automatic resolution of this issue won't be available in a future Windows update. Manual steps are necessary to complete the installation of this update on devices which are experiencing this error.

The WinRE partition requires 250 megabytes of free space. Devices which do not have sufficient free space will need to increase the size of the partition via manual action. For guidance on making this change, review the following resources:

A code script can be used to extend the partition size. A sample script has been provided in the documentation for adding an update package to WinRE. See Extend the Windows RE Partition.

Guidance to manually change the WinRE partition size can additionally be found in KB5028997: Instructions to manually resize your partition to install the WinRE update.

Completion of these manual steps will allow the installation of this update to succeed.

Affected platforms:

Client: Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 10, version 21H2

Server: Windows Server 2022

******************************************************************************************************

If you don't have WinRE enabled and don't plan to use it, you may simply hide the KB5034441 update using the WUShowHide.diagcab tool.

The tool can be downloaded from the following link:

https://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f22d5fdb-59cd-4275-8c95-1be17bf70b21/wushowhide.diagcab

Select the KB5034441 update and hide it.

I repeat it was not lazy and worked on W11, but as a W10 user I don’t care how careful and wonderful it worked on W11, they just ported lazily from to w10, knowing it was not going to work.

This guy is no a “hater”, and self proclaimed techie Windows “enthusiast”, always pushing people to patch for security, still this is one of the few occasions he rants:

And this is one of his lasts, he comments they could script it to show the error once or not offer the update if you don’t have a WinRE partition, if you don’t use BitLocker, or if you are in Home Ed. But nooooo, they lazily pushed universally for everyone even when most don’t need, making  a lot of people worry and pulling the hairs when they see they should “contact support”, not everyone comes here and for what you see here not even people in the chat or support is helpful, because is an unnecessary problem created by W update people, call it lazy or not but is  screw up.

I said the patch is lazy, not that the engineers are lazy, perhaps on contrary they are over worked and unmotivated people, as shown in some reports from MS; but still there seems to be a poor leadership and management there.

But the argument really doesn't hold as only the same small percentage of Windows 11 will have the Pro edition so it is the same percentage of the tiny population with Windows 11 that will be affected by this security vulnerability as well. EVERYBODY on Windows 11 Home were offered their version of this security patch.

So it comes down to my interpretation of the event. Microsoft decided to do a "phase" launch which created the problem. It is the "SAME" port. There is no different port. If Microsoft decided to do a blind dive without a phase launch, then it wouldn't have this problem.

Microsoft told people in the release notes that you don't have to worry about it if you don't have a winre partition. Only the busybodys on tech forums insist that they have to block the update. Even if you have a winre partition, wait for a permanent fix, you don't have to do all the blocking stuff.

Also end-users can upgrade to the Pro edition at any time, which would create a security hole for them if the patch is not offered to everyone.

Since the beginning you keep referring about W11, that is irrelevant.

I don’t care if they did a wonderful and dedicated work in this patch as the Manhattan or Apollo project on W11, as a W10 user if they ported it lazily from there (because the partition systems is very different), knowing it will not work,  is a screw up:

    1. Assuming is true what you say W update can detect when you upgrade to PRO that you don’t have and need the patch and install it.
    2. Upgrading to PRO doesn’t mean you’ll use BitLocker, actually I have PRO, but I don’t have a WinRE partition nor I use BitLocker, is double irrelevant for me. Is not that a hacker in a banana country is going to take on your device online, it requires physical access to your PC. So I only can imagine some corps, big or tiny, using BitLocker, and distrust of their own employs accessing their devices may be worry for this. Totally irrelevant for Average Joe.
    3. Ok let’s give you right for a second, the patch is super important to have it in everyone, then with a more reason a major screw up if it doesn’t works if 1) average users has to do experiments their drives partition until it works 2) or as it is happening now, most people ended up hiding this "super important" update

So in anyway, as you want to see it, it’s a mayor screw up, stop defending their incompetence and bad decisions, is not the first one, they just did it this month again.

What I read somewhere & appears to be true, if KB5034441 is not installing & throwing an error, then any future updates will not install. For 5 days when KB5034441 tried to install but could not, I did not receive any Defender updates, the ones I get almost every day.

After I hid KB5054441, the KB2267602 Defender Definition updates started coming in again almost right away. Maybe a coincidence, but I don't recall ever having a 5 day lapse of Definition updates. I am notified of these (and all updates) but have to click in order to install them, so am pretty much aware of their frequency.

If KB5034441 keeps failing to install, can anyone confirm this stops other updates from installing?

Just a couple of notes to everyone on thread. Going to start with the error message we got from KB5034441. I was still getting the definitive updates and of course the error from KB5034441. Though worried maybe something else would fail to show. I finally after 2-3 weeks time hid it. Then of course just recently we had the error on KB5001716. Which I spent the whole first day trying to fix it using DISM and sfc scannow among others. None of them worked (forget the troubleshooter that fails to notice it is even bad), Though there is a difference between the two. The first one never updated nor fixed. The one just some days ago had already updated in Oct and also on March 5th. Then tried to update again. Then just hid it and it fixed it and left the ones that had already updated alone. No more errors for now. So for MS still having a black eye for KB5034441 and not really knowing if it has been fixed behind the scenes or a not needed update. The fixes for the KB5034441 as called out by MS and those on YT work for some and not others. Not me because I am not about to cause more problems by partitioning something that MS needs to repair, or resend a good copy for all. For those who wish to fix this last one just hide it. It also states it is fixed by the program. You are only removing the error upload.
