Update KB5034441 fails to install

So the other topic about this was lokced for who knows what reason, why lock a topic / problem that has not been resolved yet?

I keep getting notification every day about this update and as you know we cannot install it because of some problem. What I read in the other locked topic is that the update is something for bitlocker, I dont use bitlocker so do I need it? Also is there a way to set windows to ignore this update and stop reminding me about it ?

MS needs to fix this and not have people doing all kinds of risky steps in order to fix it. Most people wont know what to do when they see that the update can't be installed, many are not that good with technical windows stuff. So if anyone can tell me a way to tell windows to ignore this update thx.

EDIT: I just saw a video where they explained how to hide it using a tool from MS called WUShowHide, isnt there a way to hide it directly in windows without the need of downloading this tool?

Devices attempting to install the January 2024 Windows Recovery Environment update (KB5034441) might display an error related to the size of the Recovery Environment's partition. The Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is used to repair or recover from issues affecting Windows.

Resulting from this error, the following message might be displayed.

"0x80070643 - ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE"

Important: If your Windows device does not have a recovery environment configured, you do not need this update (KB5034441). In this case, the error can be ignored.

To determine whether your device has a recovery environment configured, inspect the WinRE status by following these steps:

Open a Command Prompt window (cmd) as admin.

To check the WinRE status, run reagentc /info. If the WinRE is configured, a "Windows RE status" field will appear in the output, with value "Enabled". If WinRE is not configured, this field will have the value "Disabled".

Resolution: Automatic resolution of this issue won't be available in a future Windows update. Manual steps are necessary to complete the installation of this update on devices which are experiencing this error.

The WinRE partition requires 250 megabytes of free space. Devices which do not have sufficient free space will need to increase the size of the partition via manual action. For guidance on making this change, review the following resources:

A code script can be used to extend the partition size. A sample script has been provided in the documentation for adding an update package to WinRE. See Extend the Windows RE Partition.

Guidance to manually change the WinRE partition size can additionally be found in KB5028997: Instructions to manually resize your partition to install the WinRE update.

Completion of these manual steps will allow the installation of this update to succeed.

Client: Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 10, version 21H2

Server: Windows Server 2022

If you don't have WinRE enabled and don't plan to use it, you may simply hide the KB5034441 update using the WUShowHide.diagcab tool.

    Hello ZEKRI Abdelhafid, Enclosed is an image showing the OS installed on 11/5/24 so I'm hoping that answers your question, As for checking or not checking the box, when I first tried to repair it I checked the box because I clicked on a link warning what might happen if I didn't allow updates during the process and was afraid that it might damage the computer if I didn't. The process started and during the check for updates it seemed to take ages, and as I said, this didn't work and I sent you the message saying why.

    I then tried again and this time I checked the box to ignore it to see if it would then work and it did. I will however say that during the repair process, it did seem to be updating, which you can see from the last image I sent of update history.... 4 updates including KB 5034441 installed on 12/5/24 The process was out of my control once it started.

    A short while ago, I went to windows updates and clicked on "check for updates" and there was the KB 5034441 again waiting to be installed. Having just checked it again now, it shows that the update has been installed today on the 13th instead of yesterday 12th... I can take a screenshot if you like.

    To the best of my knowledge and memory, that is what has happened and my computer seems to have been able to install it not once, but twice. I really don't understand the complexity of it all, but it seems to have repaired not only KB 5034441, but my System restore is back and working and I don't get constant reminders to "Turn on Windows security" which was happening before. I'm sorry if this doesn't quite fit with your findings, but as I think I've already said, I am not convinced that this update hasn't messed up other aspects of my computer, but I have no way (or desire) to prove it. I hope that this is helpful and that your investigations help others as they seem to have helped me.

    It is therefore the system which is in bad shape, or even the WINRE partition is corrupted and, in this case, Repair Install of Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade should solve the 3 problems at once:

    • System corruption.
    • WINRE partition corruption.
    • Automatic installation of update KB5034441.

    And this, even if the recovery environment is disabled or not found, which you can check at the command prompt (admin) with the commands:

    REAGENTC /INFO

    And if the recovery environment is not activated, try to activate it with the REAGENCT /ENABLE command.

    After executing these 2 commands, if they succeed, and before performing the upgrade, try to restart the installation of the KB5034441 update, it should install automatically after that, or even after having also performed these checks/repairs:

    Indeed, this does not agree with my conclusions and I still say that you must check the "Download updates, drivers and optional features" box.

    I think I understood the problem with you, it's because of the first upgrade failure but in this case, the updates were downloaded with the installers.

    Then, on the second upgrade that went through, it didn't need the updates during installation because they were already downloaded during the first upgrade attempt that failed.

    So, as I am 100% certain that downloading and installing updates is necessary when upgrading by checking the box "Download updates, drivers and optional features", I ask you to please modify all your messages on this present thread and on the others to delete all the passages concerning the need to check or pass this box.

    My procedure already explains that by applying the tenforums tutorial (point 9), you must check this box "Download updates, drivers and optional features".

    For this, I take full responsibility for what I say.

    Otherwise, for the KB5034441 update which was installed a second time, this is not normal, I did not encounter this problem in the tests that I carried out, sometimes keeping the system installed (without deleting it ) for 3 days and sometimes more.

    Monitor this update, if it doesn't reinstall in 2 days for example, that's good, on the other hand, if it reinstalls again, we'll see how to resolve this problem....

    Otherwise, regarding the ISO that you used to perform the upgrade, you still have not answered my question repeated 3 times regarding the download page etc….
