I saw that I have 520MB of Healthy Recovery Partition in which I failed to shrink and the error was "you may not shrink OEM, ESPY or recovery partitions, or, offline volumes. The volume you have selected may not be shrunk. Please select another volume and try again.".) (Also when I shrink from C: and then I do not see new partition which suppose to be seen).

So kindly help.

Hi,

I have followed the instructions in KB5028997, but I've hit a snag. Which partition is the OS one?

DISKPART> list part

Partition ### Type Size Offset

Partition 1 System 650 MB 1024 KB

Partition 3 Primary 459 GB 779 MB
Partition 4 Recovery 990 MB 460 GB
Partition 5 Recovery 14 GB 461 GB

Is the OS Partition the "System" one or the "Primary" one?

What happens if you have a large fleet of machines, intentionally hardened, without a recovery partition and WinRE, and the update continues to fail because a recovery partition doesn't exist? The fix is worse than the disease.

You're trying to shrink the Recovery partition. In contrast, the article tells you to shrink the OS partition and create a bigger Recovery partition.

More information:

The update failed with a fatal error when unmounting the WIM. This is due to a lack of free space in the WinRE partition. Resizing the Recovery partition is a sure way to fix this.

Resizing the Recovery partition to 750 MB resolves the issue. That applies if you use the Windows-default winre.wim.

For OEM-supplied winre.wim (which has additional drivers and packages), ensure the Recovery partition's size is atleast 100 MB more than the size of the custom wim.

However, if you're hesitant, you may wait and see if Microsoft releases a fix.
