Windows 10 Update Error(0x80070643)

Hello,

The 2024-01 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034441) will not install on my Windows 10 laptop computer.

I get the following message There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80070643) Retry

When I click on Retry it says its Installing-0% for a few minutes then Installed-100% and then I get Download Error (0x80070643) There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. Windows Update Troubleshooter could not fix this problem.

I'm not sure what to do, please help.

Devices attempting to install the January 2024 Windows Recovery Environment update ( KB5034441) might display an error related to the size of the Recovery Environment's partition. The Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is used to repair or recover from issues affecting Windows.

Resulting from this error, the following message might be displayed.

"0x80070643 - ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE"

Workaround: It might be necessary to increase the size of the WinRE partition in order to avoid this issue and complete the installation. Note that 250 megabytes of free space is required in the recovery partition. Guidance to change the WinRE partition size can be found in KB5028997: Instructions to manually resize your partition to install the WinRE update.

Next steps: We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

Affected platforms:

Client: Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 10, version 21H2

Server: Windows Server 2022

Fix error 0x80070643 for Windows 10 KB5034441 update - Your Windows Guide

Microsoft has provided a script fix mentioned here in detail on how to run a script that increases the size of the WinRE partition.

In the Windows search,

Search for Windows Powershell, right-click it and choose run as administrator.

Next, execute this command:

set-executionpolicy remotesigned

Afterwards, select Yes to All when prompted. Keep the Window open.

Make two folders on your C drive root, with names 1 and 2, so their paths are as follows:

C:\1

C:\2

Paste the script file you downloaded into folder 1.

In the Powershell window, navigate to the C drive folder and enter this command:

cd C:\1

This will ensure the folder which contains the script is selected. Now, we need to run the script, which increases the size of WinRE. For that, run the following command:

.\1.ps1

After that, press Y to confirm running the script.

Update: Microsoft is working on a fix. Until then, you may ignore the Windows Update error 0x80070643 and wait for an official fix.

Important: Follow the workaround only if you're comfortable with the diskpart console tool because it can be a risky procedure. Otherwise, please start a new thread and seek the assistance of an IA or moderator.

Workaround: Resizing the Recovery partition to 750 MB or more will fix the issue. The error occurs due to a lack of free disk space in the Recovery partition.

Caveat: The above Microsoft article assumes the Recovery partition is situated next to the OS partition. That's not necessarily the case in many systems. So, a different approach has to be followed on systems where the Recovery partition is not located near the OS partition. In that case, please start a new thread and seek the assistance of an advisor or volunteer moderator.

REGARDING THE WINDOWS UPDATE KB503441 ERROR 0x80070643 –

Does my Windows 10 PC EVEN HAVE a Recovery Partition? I asked this question at answers.microsoft.com because from the returned information I’d gotten from DISKPART, Device Manager, and REAGENTC /INFO, it seemed to me that these tools might be telling me different stories. I thought: IF I DON'T HAVE A RECOVERY PARTITION, then it seemed that even though I got error code 0x80070643 when I attempted to install Windows update KB5034441 and the update installation failed, I could follow suggestions on other discussion threads that said just to wait for a Microsoft fix to: KB5034441: Windows Recovery Environment update for Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2: January 9, 2024. But I didn’t want to wait.

I’d been unable for some time to use Windows System Protection successfully and get a completed Restore from a restore point. That bothered me because I’d not had that problem prior to attempting to install a certain Windows Update (sorry…I can’t remember the name of it), and I didn’t find out System Restore no longer worked for a quite a while. So, when I got the 0x80070643 error on my attempt to install the update KB503441 – which was apparently issued to stop a certain hack potential – I decided I wanted to try to get the problem fixed. I wasn’t sure what to do because I COULD create a valid Restore POINT, but I could not successfully restore back to it – the process always ended by saying a system image couldn’t be found. Disk Management showed I had a “healthy partition” where it would normally be found (i.e., very often adjacent to the right of the system partition), but said nothing about it being a RECOVERY partition.

So I finally tried asking the question at answers.microsoft.com – Does my Windows 10 PC EVEN HAVE a Recovery Partition. I was extremely fortunate to have a Volunteer Moderator, Ramesh Srinivasan ,come to my aid (while I’m not illiterate regarding Windows’ workings, I haven’t delved much into its “guts” for the last dozen years or so -- suffice it to say my skills were pretty rusty). As I followed Ramesh’s clear directions, I have to say I was thoroughly impressed by both his knowledge of Windows problems repair, and with his patience across the 3-day long interchange we had to reach a successful problem resolution. Somehow over time, along the way of multiple update installations, my Recovery functions (and winre.wim) had somehow been transplanted into my System partition!

I would probably have never figured that out on my own, and it was Ramesh’s skills and talents that eventually put my system back in shape and allow update KB5034441 to install with no errors. Rather than rehash here what we went through to get things fixed, you can follow our conversation by CTL-CLICKING the Ramesh Srinivasan link above. I can honestly and happily say -- If you ever file a question at answers.microsoft.com, hope that you’re lucky enough to have Ramesh respond to it!
