I am running Windows 10 Home 2004 (Build 19041.450). Windows Update notified me that there was a cumulative update available to install (2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4571756)). When I told it to install the update, it will download and go up to "Installing - 100%" and then just show this error: I've tried the following in an attempt to fix the error: Run "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt Run "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<Source of clean Windows 10 2004 ISO created using Windows Media Creation Tool> /LimitAccess" in an elevated command prompt Uninstall and reinstall NET framework 3.5 from "Turn Windows features on or off" in Control Panel Manually download the specific update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it Stop the Windows Update service and delete the Windows Update cache located in "%SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistrubution", then restart the service Obviously, none of these worked so I'm looking for any other solutions to this problem. Any help is appreciated.

Yeah.... Only that whatever lengthy instructions you typed, it was already there since last 45+ days in this 21 page long thread (and counting)! If only anything could ever work! This is a nice strategy by the SuperGods. Don't offer any proper solution. Instead of that, create an online forum where no one knows the other. Let forum members crib online, put efforts in offering "solutions", do hours and days and weeks and months "trial-and-error", and keep making suggestions and complaints. Keeps Everyone busy, with no actual solution! :-)

Since installing the complete update with the Media Creation Tool, all other subsequent cumulative updates worked flawlessly. However, I am still on v2004 and get updates for this build instead of upgrading to 20H2. Does anyone have an idea as to why that is so?

The current media creation tool does download 20H02 iso. Make sure you download media creation tool from the website and use the downloaded version to create the iso for in site upgrade.

Theres one sure way of stopping windows update from working ever again and thats if you remove windows defender with msmg toolkit or ntlite, in short if you screw with the iso update wont work. This is no coincidence, its done on purpose.

A perfect recipe for disaster, if a wrong person provides wrong inputs for stealing/sabotaging the users machine and key info! SuperGods at MS don't want to understand this simple problem. Such a pity - no solution even in months!

This is strange.
