Cumulative update won't install (KB4571756) (Error 0x800f081f)

I am running Windows 10 Home 2004 (Build 19041.450). Windows Update notified me that there was a cumulative update available to install (2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4571756)). When I told it to install the update, it will download and go up to "Installing - 100%" and then just show this error:

I've tried the following in an attempt to fix the error:

  • Run "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt
  • Run "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<Source of clean Windows 10 2004 ISO created using Windows Media Creation Tool> /LimitAccess" in an elevated command prompt
  • Uninstall and reinstall NET framework 3.5 from "Turn Windows features on or off" in Control Panel
  • Manually download the specific update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it
  • Stop the Windows Update service and delete the Windows Update cache located in "%SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistrubution", then restart the service

Obviously, none of these worked so I'm looking for any other solutions to this problem. Any help is appreciated.

So if I'm not wrong the ISO only gets the patch files added IF run from setup.exe?

NO the updates are stored in the windows install folder on your hard disk and added during setup. Only way for files, like updates, drivers etc is to slip stream them into the ISO image. Running setup from iso only extracts window files to a temp folder for installing, if I read correctly what you are referring to.

My computer has tried running the update for a a couple of weeks now, and I still get the error as OP. I've tried all of the above, minus Installing from ISO. Id would prefer not to have to go that route as I don't have a constant connection to the internet and I don't like using bandwidth from my phone.

Using a downloaded ISO file should use much less bandwidth than repeatedly trying Windows Update: You only have to download the ISO once. You can use it like a Windows Upgrade, even if it is the same Winodws 10 version that you already have installed. Just mount the ISO file in Windows, which will create a new drive letter. Then run setup.exe from the new drive letter to repair or upgrade Windows. It preserves installed software and data files, just like upgrading via Windows Update.

By default, this method will also add-in the latest Cumulative Update (unless you tell it not to). There should be a new CU available on October 13, 2020.

You always have the option of backing everything up, creating USB bootable install media from the ISO file and then performing a clean install to a blank hard drive or SSD. But using an ISO file does not force you to do it that way.

I am suffering from the same problem on my new PC bought a week back.

I've tried everything that was suggested through DISM in the following thread:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows\_10-update/windows-updates-is-stuck/dc20d165-c55a-431a-879a-56da9ebb4971

Please see the detailed response and logs which I have mentioned clearly in the above thread.

Additional issue that I have is that "Pause Update for 7 days" and "Pause Until" (the drop-down for picking a future date in Advanced Options) is completely disabled.

After thoroughly reading each and every message on this 14-page long thread, it seems that even the in-place repair may not be a sure way to fix. I also tried to install the Update for Windows (KB4577063) by directly downloading it from the MS Catalogue site, but its installation also failed. :-((

Please help me what to do next?

    1. Whether I should wait for the next release by Microsoft and till which date?

Even if I do wait, will the new patch be installed because this one (kb4571756) might block its installation (??)

    1. Or, should I go for in-place repair?

    Thanks a lot
