Cumulative update won't install (KB4571756) (Error 0x800f081f)

I am running Windows 10 Home 2004 (Build 19041.450). Windows Update notified me that there was a cumulative update available to install (2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4571756)). When I told it to install the update, it will download and go up to "Installing - 100%" and then just show this error: 

I've tried the following in an attempt to fix the error:

  • Run "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt
  • Run "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<Source of clean Windows 10 2004 ISO created using Windows Media Creation Tool> /LimitAccess" in an elevated command prompt
  • Uninstall and reinstall NET framework 3.5 from "Turn Windows features on or off" in Control Panel
  • Manually download the specific update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it
  • Stop the Windows Update service and delete the Windows Update cache located in "%SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistrubution", then restart the service

Obviously, none of these worked so I'm looking for any other solutions to this problem. Any help is appreciated.

    You are wasting your time with this POS operating system, 5 years have passed and microsoft still can't get it working properly.

    Windows 10 October 2020 Update is now available for download. This is version 20H2 of Windows 10.

    If you were waiting for this to try to get the latest Cumulative Update installed, now you can try. Mount the new ISO file in Windows. This will create a new drive letter, from which you can run setup exe. By default it should also install the latest Cumulative Update.

    You could also see if it is offered to your device by checking Windows Update in Settings.

    It's not just you who had the issue. A lot of PCs have been affected and not even my own problem was solved with one in-place upgrade. So keep your calm, in-place upgrade works for some doesn't for others

    • clearly indicating it isn't a PERFECT solution. We need info from MS since they would probably know better.

    Agree totally,

    Using the 2004 iso image for a clean install or in place upgrade is not advised since this is the same image that started update problems for the 3 last months. 

    I would even wait for the next 20H2 iso to be proven to be safe in the field before using it for a repair. 

    If it ain't broken don't fix it ( from unknown but wise guy)
