Cumulative update won't install (KB4571756) (Error 0x800f081f)

I am running Windows 10 Home 2004 (Build 19041.450). Windows Update notified me that there was a cumulative update available to install (2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4571756)). When I told it to install the update, it will download and go up to "Installing - 100%" and then just show this error: 

I've tried the following in an attempt to fix the error:

  • Run "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt
  • Run "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<Source of clean Windows 10 2004 ISO created using Windows Media Creation Tool> /LimitAccess" in an elevated command prompt
  • Uninstall and reinstall NET framework 3.5 from "Turn Windows features on or off" in Control Panel
  • Manually download the specific update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it
  • Stop the Windows Update service and delete the Windows Update cache located in "%SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistrubution", then restart the service

Obviously, none of these worked so I'm looking for any other solutions to this problem. Any help is appreciated.

    Ive been trying for over a week to install this update KB4571756, the same thing keeps happening, the update downloads fine, it's gets up to 20% when installing, then goes to 44% then straight to 100% and then the error code of 0x80073701 comes up,  i even installed Reimage PC Repair which Windows recommended would fix the problem, it didn't and cost me £31, bloody con!! from the comments on here this is widespread, so can one of the so called experts on here come up with a solution for this problem for everyone and preferably an easy to fix solution, we're not all tech bloody savvy!!

    i have the same issue and absolutely none of the random guesses from microsoft on this thread have worked.

    I so miss XP! Totally customizable, stable--never an issue! Thank god I held onto it till 10! The only reason I upgraded was because I had no choice! Heard all the horror stories with Vista, 7 and 8! Since I got 10 I've had constant issues with hardware and apps and had to replace a lot of apps because they were not backward compatible! Hundreds lost! In all the years I had XP (since 2001, replaced in 2012) I never had to wipe and reinstall as I've had too at least five times with 10 in 8 years!
