Windows Update notified me that there was a cumulative update available to install (2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4571756)). Same, second try at the in-place upgrade and it worked, no issues on updating.
also it didn't take that long, the first try took like 3 hours and I gave up.
I understand your frustration.
In August another update failed to install in a similar way and there were several retries per day. I stopped windows update waiting for the September patch tuesday.
Now i am using a Microsoft tool to hide this offending update. I think they developped this tool for cases just like this. This is the second month in a row now with failing updates.
OHHKAY. LOOKS LIKE I LUCKED OUT. SECOND ATTEMPT AT IN PLACE UPGRADE HAS FIXED THE ISSUE AND I WAS ABLE TO UPDATE TO THE OCTOBER PATCH PREVIEW. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW BUT IT WORKED.
