I am running Windows 10 Home 2004 (Build 19041.450). Windows Update notified me that there was a cumulative update available to install (2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4571756)). When I told it to install the update, it will download and go up to "Installing - 100%" and then just show this error: I've tried the following in an attempt to fix the error: Run "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt Run "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<Source of clean Windows 10 2004 ISO created using Windows Media Creation Tool> /LimitAccess" in an elevated command prompt Uninstall and reinstall NET framework 3.5 from "Turn Windows features on or off" in Control Panel Manually download the specific update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it Stop the Windows Update service and delete the Windows Update cache located in "%SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistrubution", then restart the service Obviously, none of these worked so I'm looking for any other solutions to this problem. Any help is appreciated.

Since installing the complete update with the Media Creation Tool, all other subsequent cumulative updates worked flawlessly. However, I am still on v2004 and get updates for this build instead of upgrading to 20H2. Does anyone have an idea as to why that is so?

Yeah.... Only that whatever lengthy instructions you typed, it was already there since last 45+ days in this 21 page long thread (and counting)! If only anything could ever work! This is a nice strategy by the SuperGods. Don't offer any proper solution. Instead of that, create an online forum where no one knows the other. Let forum members crib online, put efforts in offering "solutions", do hours and days and weeks and months "trial-and-error", and keep making suggestions and complaints. Keeps Everyone busy, with no actual solution! :-)

For anyone still having the issue with cumulative updates not installing, try this: boot to safe mode via msconfig, navigate to command prompt, specifically Windows/system32/cmd.exe, run as admin (which I believe safe mode does automatically), run sfc /scannow (as if it already hasn't been suggested). See if it does in fact find files to repair, it will post if it has done so in the console. More than likely, if it does, that is the issue with why updates were not completing. Reboot back into windows normally by disabling safe mode and see if it will now update. Using the catalog standalone updates are recommended for those that sort through the dependecies and do the updates logically. If that is too much, see if Windows Update handles it.

First it was this KB4571756 where Windows updates were stuck, and now it is stuck at KB4586781. However, in all this continuing fiasco, the best part which I really liked is... Because of these updates getting stuck, the overall update system is stuck. So no need to download anymore updates anyway. Save on the Windows downtime and efforts when updates are getting installed, Save on data, and above all Save on all the future troubles which would anyways come due to faulty Windows updates of the future. See the bright side :-) Unfortunately these updates are required to remediate vulnerabilities that could be used to hack Windows. See the dark side :>(
