I am running Windows 10 Home 2004 (Build 19041.450). Windows Update notified me that there was a cumulative update available to install (2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB4571756)). When I told it to install the update, it will download and go up to "Installing - 100%" and then just show this error: I've tried the following in an attempt to fix the error: Run "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt Run "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<Source of clean Windows 10 2004 ISO created using Windows Media Creation Tool> /LimitAccess" in an elevated command prompt Uninstall and reinstall NET framework 3.5 from "Turn Windows features on or off" in Control Panel Manually download the specific update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it Stop the Windows Update service and delete the Windows Update cache located in "%SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistrubution", then restart the service Obviously, none of these worked so I'm looking for any other solutions to this problem. Any help is appreciated.

If you already have a downloaded ISO then you needn't worry about the download taking up your precious internet plan. Just open the ISO, run setup.exe, make sure you enable it to check for updates before installing and you're good to go (of course, don't forget to choose the option which says "Keep my data and apps").

Thanks Admin976 My ISP has data caps. However, I downloaded the media creation tool yesterday (around 20 hrs ago), and have created the ISO file. Will that ISO be good to use for in-place upgrade? If so, do we have a step-by-step guide to "make sure the setup installs all the latest CUs that are available before beginning the in-place upgrade"?? Many Thanks!

My recommendation would be: If your ISP imposes data caps and you do not want to sit and download an ISO right now, wait for the next major update (20H2). If the September patch DOES NOT install, then the October patch DEFINETLY WON'T. If you don't have any data caps, download the media creation tool and perform an in-place upgrade (make sure the setup installs all the latest CUs that are available before beginning the in-place upgrade).

Welcome to the club, There was a similar issue in August with kb4566782, so I postponed updates until September patch Tuesday. When I restarted updates at that time kb4566782 was nowhere to see, KB4576478 installed ok but kb4571756 now failed in exact the same way as kb4566782. Meanwhile I learned about the Microsoft wushowhide tool to temporarily hide updates. When running windows update today I get the red text notice "Your device is missing important security and quality fixes" no kidding ! So hiding an update is equally useless as postponing updates. I surely hope Microsoft gets this mess fixed on October 13. No way I am considering clean, repair or update install. Linux is becoming more and more attractive.

I am suffering from the same problem on my new PC bought a week back. After thoroughly reading each and every message on this 14-page long thread, it seems that even the in-place repair may not be a sure way to fix. I also tried to install the Update for Windows (KB4577063) by directly downloading it from the MS Catalogue site, but its installation also failed. :-(( Please help me what to do next? Whether I should wait for the next release by Microsoft and till which date? Even if I do wait, will the new patch be installed because this one (kb4571756) might block its installation (??)
