My laptop is running Windows 10 2004 OS build 19041.388 and windows update decides to automatically install cumulative update KB4566782 (build 19041.450). The installation will fail (0x800f081f) during updating Windows and Windows update automatically retry to install it until my laptop's battery dies.

How get out of this update loop?

update: We need a true solution, and please do not mark reinstalling windows 10 as an answer, dear moderators.

I concur 100%! To be honest, I'm quite surprised Microsoft hasn't addressed this before now. I expected a quick fix for this but my expectation was obviously in error.  :-)

I can't believe that the solution for a failing update is to re-install Windows 2004 altogether.

I know SSD's can take a lot more Terabytes than in the past, but inflicting a 60 to 90 Gb extra writes  on my SSD is not an option.

I expect this update to be fixed soon and would appreciate a more transparent and user focused communication from Microsoft on this and other update issues.

    Francis.

i did not run media creation tool, but both way will work. (without or with keep set of win10 2004 installation media for repair/reinstall)

or direct link for the win10 2004 iso,

    https://software-download.microsoft.com/sg/Win10\_2004\_English\_x64.iso?t=f0e49933-31e2-42d6-8be0-5711aa3e2751&e=1598049436&h=23b7a8cdbddb74894cf33b1bb7b86630

remember choose upgrade instead of fresh install.

same problem here with version 10.0.19041.388 and still no fix or update of KB4566782 (last release of 08/10/2020).

I wish to know that when you launched the Media Creation Tool did you choose to update your system or created a support installation (DVD or USB pen) and next launched setup.exe from operating system?

    Thanks

Solved my Win10 Home (lenovo laptop) loop with KB4566782 update failed issue (was trying remove/repair .net framework 3.5, 4.8 won't help) by using reinstall Win 10_2004 from windows media creation tool.

( I download, setup from the Win10_2004_English_x64.iso file), run setup with keep data & app.

After finished with couple reboots, now on Version 10.0.19041.450 (before this was 10.0.19041.388)  kb4566782 applied automatically during setup reinstall process from the update (as I tried run windows10.0-kb4566782-x64_cb0654ccf595c514c722ba79c5aad2567ee0ff45.msu said already installed)

The only update after reinstall Win10 2004 done is KB4569745 which has installed before.
