First, thanks for all the help and response. I'm finally ready with some information !
Hardware Summary:
Intel Core i7-7700K w/ 16gb RAM
GeForce GTX1080 8GB GDDR5X
3-Dell S2716DG 2560x1440 monitors
I had to fight through (troubleshoot) frequent CTDs. While they could occur at anytime, some happened trying to start a training mission but a CTD was guaranteed if I attempted a Sedona to Sedona free flight. So....
- Rechecked all Windows update... found I was behind 1 version and updated to the 2004 update.
- Started checking the Flight Sim's installation and found it had left multiple copies of Microsoft Visual C++ 2012, 2013 and 2015-2019 Redistributables, 2 copies each (x86, x64) NONE of which were the current version. Uninstalled these, downloaded the
current versions and installed as normal
- Still no joy
- More googling... eventually found a post to:
In the Windows Search bar, type Advanced system settings and open the Control Panel.
then Advanced System Settings->Advanced->Performance->Advanced-Virtual Memory: Change-> Set all drives to "System managed size"
Note: A similar solution is posted at https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015893879-How-to-troubleshoot-crashes-CTDs-during-gameplay however,
they want you to enter a pagefile size. The original post I found suggested setting to "System managed size" which I did.
- Finally, NO MORE Crash To Desktop events.
Side note ... I did find a post that suggested running Steam.exe and/or FlightSimulator.exe to Run As Administrator but this seemed to cause more problems, didn't help any and I reverted to unchecking all Compatibility options.
One other note, most sub-windows in FS will pop-out as separate windows and can be easily moved to other screens.
What I still haven't figured out is the shortcut "New UI Window Mode - RIGHT ALT"... seems self-explanatory but I haven't gotten it to do anything in full screen or windowed mode...
I'm finally ready to re-address running multiple monitors w/ Surround (whether 2 or 3 monitors).
So far I'm experiencing:
Single Monitor tests:
80-115 fps @2560x1440 Training Mission 1
90-145 fps @1920x1080 Training Mission 1
So I have a basic general question before I continue testing Surround:
What's the best way to set the resolution for a game?
- Set resolutions & refresh rates to recommended specs before starting a game, then switch res in game
or
set specs to intended in-game resolution prior to launching the game? Does it matter?
- Should you ever set monitor hardware (resolution/refresh rates) to anything other than their recommended settings?
Any other hints for getting the most out of NVidia's control panel settings such as GPU characteristics like antialiasing, ambience, CUDA, PhysX settings(Processor), G-SYNC or GeForce Experience or other tips you've found important/helpful would be much
appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any additional help !
