I've done my system restore and it has worked. Sorry, would have done it earlier, but I was watching F1 free practice and doing other stuff on the PC and you need around 90 minutes to do the restore (times will vary according to your PC and what you have
installed I imagine).
Everything is now working fine for me and all updates are installed. I used the USB option and apart from having to reboot a couple of times it was all hands off.
I would suggest anyone who has an issue should try this method. For anyone who hasn't followed this conversation and can't be bothered to look, I'll re-post the link to what you have to do:

I'm so glad this worked out for you!! F1 free practice eh? I'm a Nascar fan, although I'll watch F1 occasionally.
In reading that article YET AGAIN.... it's a bit scary to think I could lose MUCH information/ apps/files, etc. if I opt to do this. Not sure I'm ready to make the plunge quite yet! Which option did you choose when you did the restore??? Whenever I look
for installed updates, all it shows is a 1 driver (that failed to update.) It never shows me what the latest cumulative updates that were installed on my machine. ????????
I've had this problems since day 1. It NEVER shows me my windows updates. Least of my problems I guess.
Glad you were successful! I just keep hoping MS comes out with a fix for this mess, before I go and ruin things even more on my own.
We need a white-hat hacker/cracker to come out with a free-standing app" WINDOWS UPDATE B-GONE" that will fix this MESS. I'm sure it's possible... :D - Thanks again.
