So the issue with my wifi connecting and disconnecting, which I believe is related to the last update I can't get rid of, will presumably get fixed in another update which is launched to deal with all the problems with previous updates.

So for people having problems, I would try to install updates in safe mode. I am answering my own question after finding this article on line and to give info to anyone who may want to update in in this way. https://windowsreport.com/install-windows-updates-safe-mode/ As for installing updates in safe mode: from the article: Should you install Windows Updates in Safe Mode? Since not all devices and components are active in Safe Mode, this will result in only partial updates. This eventually leads to intermittent file errors or registry errors when you finally boot the PC normally. Because of this, services and features that we are used to running in the background, such as Windows updates, will not be activated by default. Note: Microsoft recommends that you do not install service packs or updates when Windows is running in Safe mode unless you cannot start Windows normally . Even so, if you do install a service pack or update while Windows is running in Safe mode, immediately reinstall it after you start Windows normally. The article does explain how to do updates in safe mode with the caveat: By following these steps, you should now be able to get the latest Windows updates, even when you boot the PC in Safe Mode. While this is not recommended, there are a few situations when this may be your only choice left. News to me! The plot just keeps on thickening.

Thank you very much. By the way I have been using the new Microsoft Edge for almost a year since version 79 RC at the Leaked link in Google Search. It's great we all have choices and are able to use the browser we want (for now.) If you enjoy Edge, more power to you. Just the mere fact that they are constantly nagging me about it and forcing it on my computer makes me not want to use it at all. Perhaps it's better, but for that reason alone, I'm steering clear. I had been wondering about Internet Explorer (I don't use that either) but found another article that they will discontinue IE next year. Microsoft will bid farewell to Internet Explorer and legacy Edge in 2021 https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/17/21372487/microsoft-internet-explorer-11-support-end-365-legacy-edge From the article in part: "Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer 11 across its Microsoft 365 apps and services next year. On August 17th, 2021, Internet Explorer 11 will no longer be supported for Microsoft’s online services like Office 365, OneDrive, Outlook, and more. Microsoft is also ending support for Internet Explorer 11 with the Microsoft Teams web app later this year, with support ending on November 30th. Alongside the support changes, Microsoft is also planning to drop support for its existing legacy version of Microsoft Edge on March 9th, 2021. After the end of support date, the legacy version of Edge will no longer receive security updates. Microsoft has been moving existing Windows 10 users over to new its Chromium-based Edge browser, and the company says new devices and future Windows feature updates will all include the new Edge browser." Will not affect me any, since I don't use either, but some of you may. This explains to me-- WHY they are pushing EDGE.

go down to Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider and make sure it is NOT disabled (it probably is). TY again. Hmmm.. I have nothing that says Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider in that list. Closest thing says MS Software Shadow. I looked through whole list and nothing is disabled. I'm not going to worry about this anymore. I've made some changes to system since my restore points anyway. I also rolled back to previous version of windows after the latest update really hosed me. Not sure I even want to go back at this point. Appreciate your time always! I'm just waiting for the next forced update and see what wonderful surprises are in store.

My restore points reappeared after I went into the 1.Windows Power Shell (admin ) Right click Start click on Windows Power Shell (admin) wait for prompt, then type services.msc Hit ENTER When all of your services come up go down to Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider and make sure it is NOT disabled (it probably is). Exit and restart computer in Safe mode...your System Restore Points (dates) should be back, choose one before September 8 and let it take it's time (took a couple of hours for mine) and it will say "You have safely restored your computer" back to the given date. Hopefully, it will work for you. That is the only way I was able to recover 100%. Good luck.
