Cumulative updates - September 2020

Hi Sumit, 

I checked for updates on 09/27/2020 with Build 19041.508 and W.U. offered a bunch of optional updates for drivers.

In particular one got my attention because it is 2 years older than the one that was already installed in the machine.

The driver is for Intel UHD Graphics 620 .

1. Driver installed in the machine was: 27.20.100.8681 dated 9/05/2020.
2. The one offered by W.U. is:              24.20.100.6346 dated 9/14/2018.

Any reason why Windows Update is pushing an older driver ?

Do they even check the currently installed driver before offering an older one ?

A similar thing also happened with an Intel Chipset SATA PCIe controller with Insider build 20221 where W.U. installed an older driver directly. (Not with the Optional Updates). 

Had to reinstall the later driver manually after W.U. installed the older one.

Thanks once again for trying to make things simpler for me.   At this point I feel as if I need a PhD in Software Engineering to do what I need 

to do.  One of the things that really bothers me is that I had 4 restore points set up before I installed the new update (2004.)  After it installed, all my restore points were gone!  I know others had the same thing happen.  Now that I've rolled back to 1909, restore points still not there.  I've been clicking link after link you provided and my head is spinning at this point.  Need a break for now because after spending hours looking and looking, I'm past dazed and confused. You put a link "Other troublshooting steps....for Windows 10 Pro."  I don't have Pro but I'm sure it will help others. 

I did the first three things you suggested:Not quite sure what was supposed to show up in the Restorehealth cmd run.  I ran all with Admin privileges.

I am TOTALLY LOST in  regard to:

Set the AUOptions DWORD value here to one of the following values:

1 = Never check for updates

2 = Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them

3 = Download updates but let me choose whether to install them

4 = Install updates automatically

I've read it numerous time and it just doesn't 'compute' with me. No pun intended.

I dunno anymore!  Stupid Question:  WHEN I HAVE to install the new update, would it repair the registry automatically?

I'll keep searching your links and try to get over my fear of the registry.  In my mind, it's a valid fear though.

I don't know if you fix automobiles yourself, but this reminds me of people who try to fix major problems with their cars and mess it up big time. If someone asked me how to do their own:

Transmission maintenance or repair. Automatic transmissions contain thousands of small parts, precise tolerances, and narrow passageways for hydraulic fluid.“One grain of sand could wipe out your transmission.”  Best left to professionals. I could not explain the steps  in a "post."

Replacing suspension components. There are plenty of ways this kind of repair can go wrong in the hands of the uninitiated. Beginners might not understand the tremendous force that's in a compressed coil spring (when replacing struts, for instance); they might do things in the wrong order; or they might not realize that part of the suspension supports the front subframe—and the engine.

If you eyes are glazing over re: the auto analogy:  that's how I feel about computers!  I wish I had the passion most of you do! Definitely not my Forté.

BTW: I don't fix cars but for minor things, but felt it was a good comparison!

Yes. it's up to you. I just read the threads in this forum. I've been using Windows 10 Version 20H2 Build 19042.541 Release Preview Channel for a few days after updating. Now it's rare to cause 100% Disk usage in Task Manager. Unlike a few months ago. (In my opinion).
