here were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80080005).

This is the error I get every time for a few days.

I tried troubleshooting but it didn't work. 

Many have said in other queries(for the same problem) to Reset SoftwareDistribution & Catroot2 folders. But I'm scared to do that because I'm worried if something happens to my laptop.

Please suggest a way to solve this issue.

This is a frequent issue sometimes caused by driver compatibility errors: Windows 10 Update Assistant (microsoft.com)

You could try downloading the Windows Update Assistant. It can help bump your version of windows past this sort of update error to the latest version.

Choose the 1st option for the update assistant: Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

    Hey Microsoft Team,

                      non of these solutions worked for me so can you please tell me a different solution and it even says that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service of my computer can not be started.so please help me to fix this solution.

    These fixes did not work.  I have tried so many different things found online and NOTHING is working.  I've even gone through the long hassle of updating Windows through the process of reinstalling (through the UPDATE NOW option) and that didn't help, either.  I'm at my wits end.  I'm so sick and tired of Windows 10 not working as it should and the fix not being easy.  I do not want to reinstall Windows and then have to reinstall every program.  I need a real fix for this.  I believe it is also causing a problem with the MS Store that won't allow me to install a purchased app.

    Hello ArjitMittal,

    I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I want to apologize if you encountered this issue. I understand you're having trouble with failed windows updates. What is your Windows edition and version? Press Start then search Settings, select System then About.

    If you're having trouble with Windows Update, or after updates have been applied, it's safe to empty the content of the SoftwareDistribution folder. Windows 10 will always re-download all the necessary files, or re-create the folder and re-download all the components, if removed.

    **Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

    Windows 10: Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot, then select Windows Update under Get up and running, and then select Run the troubleshooter.

    **Make sure Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer services are available and running.

    Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search text area, and then click services.msc in the programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
    If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.
    Double-click Windows Update.
    If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.
    Double-click Workstation.
    If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.
    Close the Services window and try to install updates again.

    **Rename Software Distribution folders

    Note: Before trying to rename the folders, please disconnect in the internet first or Turn on Airplane mode then restart your computer.

    From Start , search for cmd
    Select Command Prompt (with the option Run as Administrator) from the results
    At the Command Prompt, type the following commands one at a time. After each, select Enter. Let the command complete before typing the next command.

    net stop wuauserv
    net stop cryptsvc
    net stop bits
    net stop msiserver
    ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
    ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
    net start wuauserv
    net start cryptSvc
    net start bits
    net start msiserver

    After all these commands are completed, close the Command Prompt window and restart your computer.
    Please try again to run the Windows Update.
