Windows 10 says I have no internet connection, but I have.

I am running on Windows 10 Enterprise, Version 2004, OS Build 19041.264.

I recently changed to the Windows Insider Program and updated Windows. In the taskbar, the Wi-Fi icon shows No Internet Access, but I have a stable internet connection wirelessly (Ex: I can browse the internet, ping IP Addresses, etc.). Another problem is when I try to open Cortana it also says that I have no internet connection (By the way, I can also open Microsoft's website).

As I know Windows checks internet connectivity with this URL: http://msftconnecttest.com/connecttest.txt. But this gives Error 404, File Not Found. Maybe it is because of this?

If you know the problem or an answer, please help. Thanks!

Hello, use Registry Editor, go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet

and modify: EnableActiveProbing

then change "Value data" from "0" to "1"

and restart your computer

The proper one is

"HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator\” -Name UseGlobalDNS -PropertyType DWORD -Value 1 -Force

But the more appropriate way to do this is not through registry directly, but through group policy config:

I don't really use it that much but i also have been using Spotify in the browser, the problem is that there are a lot of other apps that also don't work and i'm not a software developer but this issue is just beyond stupid to not have been fixed for 8 months, from a company the size as Microsoft.

If you go to Network & internet and sort by replies this is the second non fixed issue in the list after Microsoft Edge Freezing? which is locked so it doesn't really count.

The real problem is for people that rely on Windows to work and there are issues like this that make some software "temporary" useless, for example for me in a banking website i wanna do certain actions and it just doesn't work, the "loading" circle(on the site itself) just goes on for ever and i can't even log out of it, i also tried to do the same actions in 3 different browsers such as Firefox, Chrome and Edge all with the same exact problems. I also done those same actions in Windows sandbox and they work perfectly fine, in my phone as well.

Now, we are the ones with time to waste and reply in here, now image how many people out there have this problem and don't even know the cause of it or don't have time to waste and their work is just crippled.

Funny thing i also logged in here for the first time with a Github account and after 1 reply my account got "locked", i had to put my phone number just to make this reply. Scummy practices like this just make me wanna switch to Linux, i just hope more(all) software developers start to take Linux into consideration like they do for Windows when creating software.

If any Microsoft developer actually reads this topic i have never had this issue before Win10 2004 update.

I've found a solution at least to my Spotify issues. The Spotify app in W10 won't work cos of this ongoing icon issue, which has effectively locked me out of using my Spotify subscription on this machine, as when you load it, it moans there is no internet cos of the icon issue. To get around that, I am now just using the web-based Spotify player, which works perfectly - even with the globe icon there all the time.

So, if you use Spotify, uninstall the W10 app and just use the web-based player. You can find that from the Spotify website. For the last few months, I have been effectively locked out of my Spotify account, as it would never connect cos of the globe icon issue, so I was paying money to Spotify while not being able to access it. The web-based player fixes that issue, so at least I have my music back again.

I did a full reboot yesterday, and icon gone, and could ping MS server(13.107.4.52) just fine. Today, globe icon is back, and I can still ping the MS server, so therefore, any MS dll or whatever controls the globe icon thing, should be able to talk to the MS server just fine, and therefore, establish that there is internet - but it does not.

Not sure if ping is a test worthy of anything at this point, but the fact that you CAN ping the MS server at the heart of this even with the globe icon showing and saying you have no internet, suggests there is no problem talking to the MS server, and that the reason you are seeing the globe icon is nothing to do with actual internet access issues at all, and rather the app or dll or whatever it is running on the local machine, does not think there is access when there is.

I mean, it very clearly is NOT an issue with internet access anyway, cos even with the globe icon, everyone on the thread has reported that the internet access is working regardless(thank God), so I dunno....... :(

My ping test completed with 100% success, so both the outgoing 32-byte ping packet was sent, and crucially, the MS server responded to the ping, so the packet is coming back from the MS server.

This issue of it not seeing the inernet just came up after the last date. All year theres been issues with connection drops. Says theres no router or modem and i need an ethernet cord when I’m using WIFI. It’ll log on perfectly for a week or so tjen a new update comes along then it takes a half an hour to get on.

sometimes it won’t let me turn WIFI on under manual. But 1,2,3 comes up.

I just give up!!! I’m sick of it.
