Windows 10 says I have no internet connection, but I have.

I am running on Windows 10 Enterprise, Version 2004, OS Build 19041.264.

I recently changed to the Windows Insider Program and updated Windows. In the taskbar, the Wi-Fi icon shows No Internet Access, but I have a stable internet connection wirelessly (Ex: I can browse the internet, ping IP Addresses, etc.). Another problem is when I try to open Cortana it also says that I have no internet connection (By the way, I can also open Microsoft's website).

As I know Windows checks internet connectivity with this URL: http://msftconnecttest.com/connecttest.txt. But this gives Error 404, File Not Found. Maybe it is because of this?

If you know the problem or an answer, please help. Thanks!

Hello, use Registry Editor, go to: 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet

and modify: EnableActiveProbing

then change "Value data" from "0" to "1"

and restart your computer

The proper one is

"HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator\” -Name UseGlobalDNS -PropertyType DWORD -Value 1 -Force

But the more appropriate way to do this is not through registry directly, but through group policy config:

    I finally got this to work after scouring the internet. Here are my regedit settings:

    Feel free to try and use the settings I've found to work (pictured above). Full settings I used are as follows (in case something happens to the screenshot):

    ActiveDnsProbeContent = 8.8.4.4

    ActiveDnsProbeContentV6 = 2001:4860:4860::8844

    ActiveDnsProbeHost = dns.google.com

    ActiveDnsProbeHostV6 = dns.google.com

    ActiveWebProbeContent = Microsoft Connect Test

    ActiveWebProbeContentV6 = Microsoft Connect Test

    ActiveWebProbeHost = test.dynamix.run

    ActiveWebProbeHostV6 = test.dynamix.run

    ActiveWebProbePath = connecttest.txt

    ActiveWebProbePathV6 = connecttest.txt

    EnableActiveProbing = 1

    Your network won't show that it's online until you launch a browser and connect to a site after logging into Windows 10. That seems to be when the internet check is finally made.

    I use Blackbird which modifies the hosts file to block Microsoft's default internet test. Hope this is a useful alternative for someone.

    Same problem here after opening https://www.msftconnecttest.com/connecttest.txt as antus_775 after testing in Firefox, Chrome and Edge, all give a certificate error.

    Error at that link(after the certificate error & connecting to the page anyway):

    I've got similar error (SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN) when using FireFox but NCIS is working as intended. Probably because Windows NCIS doesn't use HTTPS. :)

    For checking connection to www.msftconnecttest.com you should use Power Shell or Windows Command Prompt and tool like "curl www.msftconnecttest.com/connecttest.txt" or "nslookup www.msftconnecttest.com". I get quite similar answers from curl when trying to use HTTPS connection to that site:

    "curl: (35) schannel: SNI or certificate check failed: SEC_E_WRONG_PRINCIPAL (0x80090322)"

    Domain names inside certificate aren't quite the same. Inside that cert I can see aliases like: q-ring.msedge.net, c-ring.msedge.net. But it doesn't cover domain name propagated inside www.msftconnecttest.com (or rather 4-c-0003.c-msedge.net in my case) DNS record. It should be "*.c-msedge.net".
